First attempt at a DIY playstand.

I can't call it quite finished yet, but it is at a use-able point at least! though I still have to decide how I want to attach dishes. First picture is the better half and my youngest helping me out wrapping the perches in sisal. And second is the finished product.

I have run in to a dilemma though I'd love any suggestions on. Ely likes to chew the sisal on the perches, however when he goes through a strand, it loosens all the rope on the pipe in the general area, and then he wont stand on that portion anymore since the rope slips.

I was thinking maybe "painting" the pvc with Elmers and then wrapping the sisal, but i'm not sure how I feel about that yet.

Really nice! I am putting this near the top of my projects. For your dishes, I recommend mounting PVC end caps that stainless steel dishes will fit into. This way, you can easily clean them!

That's a fantastic idea! I don't think that would have ever crossed my mind, thank you!

And yeah, I really like the DIY route, you get a lot more for what you spend, and can always expand on it down the road.

Use vet wrap to wrap around the PVC pipes so they won't slip. Easier then glueing and wrapping sisal rope. Looks great though!

Any specific brands to look in to that are more bird safe than others? Or is it a fairly bird safe item all around? Ely chews everything he gets his beak on.

I drill a hole through the pvc where I start the rope. Run the rope through the hole, tie a knot and pull it tight. I wrap the rope tight so it won't slip all the way to the other end of the pvc and then drill another hole and tie it off. That way I know it's safe and won't go anywhere.

If it stink, no good!

Take a really close look at the claws of your Parrots as they perch on the rope rapped areas. It looks like your using 1.5" (38 mm) PVC pipe possible larger? Anyway, look at the bottom and see how much room exists between their front and back toe nails (the greater the better). Next time you are at the Big Box Store or your Neighborhood Hardware Store look for PVC flat /straight strapping or like product (aluminum or stainless steel). Place the rope rap on the PVC Pipe and then mount the strapping on the very bottom of the PVC pipe (left to right). This will lock the rope rap in place with screws ever 3 - 6" (150 - 300 mm). When the rope is cut, it will simply lay limp below the PVC pipe and the other segments will continue to be held tight by the strapping.

If it doesn't work out, no loss, you now have a nice clothes rack!
For a much larger bird it would be a bit too tippy!

Great job, especially for first attempt. No need for second one, just add on to this, until it takes over the room ( evil laugh ).

I have made at least a dozen of these, everything from small T-Stands to a massive gym that takes up an entire room...You did an awesome job for your first one!

I buy all of my vet wrap at Tractor Supply! They have a ton of colors and designs (my Senegal got Camo!), you can buy it by the roll, by a 4 pack, or an 8 pack, it's perfectly safe (no smells, and so far no ripping it off), and it's so cheap! Comparably, I first went to Walmart a long time ago looking for it when I made my first one. One wide roll at Walmart was around $4, where the same sized roll at Tractor Supply is $4 for a 4-pack!
