I want to make Jasper some flat perches/chewables. I bought some non-treated pine. My plan was to cut a big block and attach it to the side of his cage. No problem finding the wingnuts and bolts. My worry is that since the bolts are threaded all the way down, and he chewed the wood down to the bolt before I noticed, he could cut his tongue on the thread.

Am I worrying for nothing? I haven't been able to find a stainless steel bolt that is only threaded at the end that's long enough.

If I'm understanding you correctly, the wing nuts and bolts that you are using are stainless steel, yes? If so, I think your current setup will be just fine.

I'm worried about the threads being sharp enough to cut him if he mouthed or bit into them. Or am I just being dumb? I tend to overthink things that I'm not fully sure about.

You could always dull down the edges of the threads using a file. You will be pre-drilling the wood anyways so this should not be a problem to knock down the threads a bit. Did you check Lowe's for hardware? They have quite a supply of stainless steel!

Screws in the sizes you'll be using come fully threaded unless they are really long, like over 6: long. Tell me the size ( diameter) and length you need unthreaded, I will see what I have at work ( we are a master fastener distributor and have all sorts of specail threaded parts. The thread shouldnt cut his tounge, ( most threads are roll threaded and are pretty smooth, under magnification ) but they will be rough on his beak.

Since I haven't cut the board yet, size is not an issue. The board I got is 1x2x4 so I can cut it any size. I was going to try to find something that was smooth except for the end. I could drill a hole all the way through and just attach it through the bars with washers and a wingnut.
