Does anyone know if I can use braided PVC tubing to make toys for my Severe Macaw? I want to cover it with cloth and make a swing, but have no clue where to go to find out if this is safe. I made him a play structure out of PVC, but just need to be sure. Don't want to harm the guy. Thanks for all the input.. I did already make it, but before I actually give it to him.....just need to know. Thanks

I am trying to find a picture of the tubing, it is ridged, but flexible, I formed it into a circle and tied cotton strips to it. This particular tubing seems perfect for his paws, as it is wide for him. If I can't find a pic online, I will upload one, the braiding is on the inside of the tube to make it a little rigid. I bought it in the plumbing section.

I believe I misunderstood you! Was thinking you meant taking small diameter soft tubing and braiding it!

I believe PVC is toxic "IF" they can chew it into pieces. So the rigid pvc seems ok for most birds because they can't chew it up and ingest. I would watch VERY carefully and make sure your little guy can't find a way to chew up this up (I am familiar with it). It is pretty durable, but I think a beak will be able to get pieces off it.

If it were me I would NOT risk it. I rope swing is $15 - $30 depending on the size, I would either buy one or construct one out of a safe wood.

Braided PVC Tubing is available for several different applications from drain (gray) water to potable (drinkable) water, and a large number of other applications. There are price points based on application and one needs to be very careful regarding selection and use!

As with the vast majority of PVC products, there is always the concern of off-gassing and leaching issues. With Parrots, there is always the additional concern of our hook-billed friends cutting small pieces or making bigger pieces small enough to ingest.

In the World of mid to larger Parrots, whether the braided PVC Tubing is rated for drinkable water or not, their ability to cut small pieces and ingest them greatly limits its use with Parrots. As stated above, using a product like Vetrap would be high recommended with scheduled inspection and replace of the Vetrap.
