Our new baby!!

We just got back from our 10 hour journey to see our new little lady, Scarlet--soon to be Sushi. She's incredible! Just absolutely stunning, even when she is molting! She's about 4 years old, and will be coming home to us mid-june (not soon enough!) At first she didn't quite know what to think of two new strangers and was a bit nippy. She grabbed hold of my finger once & gave it a good yank but nothing that hurt. So my fiance and I went to lunch & talk over all the details, making sure it was the right time for us and that we were right for her. We went back to tell them the good news & she came right to us! She stepped up for both of us, not nipping at all, making her way carefully to our shoulders, checking us out as she went. She nestled in my hair, cleaning her beak & it was love. Neither I nor she wanted to part!

She is beautiful. I love it when a bird falls in love immediately, means it was meant to be. Congrats on your new baby and I'm sure you are anxious to get her home. Why are you having to wait to get her?

Ekkies are truly stunning birds and although I do not own one, many of my friends do and absolutely love them. It is amazing how bright their colors are, they seem to glow.

How gorgeous! I wanted to get the ones here (they've been cagemates for 10 years) but they're just too mean and out of my price range

the lady looks just like yours! Her name is Ruby and her mate is a beautiful emerald green color (Charlie!) I hope you enjoy each other!!

Thanks everyone! I'll be putting more up in a few weeks for sure!! And we were going back and forth between Dori (cause she loves doritos) and Sushi (which is one of our favorite foods). She's pretty spunky and sweet, so Scarlet seemed too demure for her. Sushi is quirky, which we wanted in a name. Also, we get to call her our Spicy Little Tuna Roll

I guess it just sorta stuck too!

HAHA!!!!! I'm glad your going with a Eclectus, aren't they sweet and stunning? Sushi it is....lol...... She looks like she can use a bath, her plumage is a bit dirty....When I picked mine up, I don't think mine ever had bath in their previous house as both of them stink badly!!!! After having them almost 3 months and many baths later, they don't stink like they were. I just wish I can stop my girl from plucking, she's been plucking before I got her, she's not as stunning as Sushi, but we love her anyway. Our girl is very sassy!!! She would grab your finger and push you out of her way if she doesn't want you. She's nipped me once when I was taking her food dish away and she wasn't having it.

I've been studying them and their saved to my favorites for future reference

But she smelled almost like honey yesterday when I was holding her. Apparently she had just had a bath yesterday in the shower but who knows! I'll be taking a shower with her every day once I get her home and adjusted! Now off to petsmart to buy toys!!!!

I just picked up a big swing to hang from the ceiling for Sushi! Her room is coming together very nicely!!! Just a quick question about sleeping arrangements: we wake up at around 4:20am to start our day, but that seems a bit early for our little lady. We want her to get all of her needed sleep, so should I just leave her in her cage when we wake up or bring her out on her perch & let her have breakfast with us?

She will need at least ten hours of sleep to not be a grumpy bird... and in my extremely limited experience waking them up before the sun is rising means grumpy bird. Generally we put the cover on the cage around eight because I wake up at five thirty and once I hear him moving around (around 6:15ish) I uncover him and give him his breakfast.

Just a tip... make sure the swing isn't above your head, can cause problems.

That is SO exciting! I remember bringing home my two baby cockatoos.
They were so adorable but so terribly behaved. We rescued them from an adoption center and it was the best choice I have ever made. You say that Sushi has nipped at you? Thats a behavior that can come and go. It's all about knowing how to classically condition them to express themselves in other ways. www.birdtricks.com

I'm not worried about her nipping at all--it was more like a slow clamp down on my finger with some firm pressure. Besides, we were two new people & there was a lot of excitement. Watching her with her old owner was the cutest thing, she loves him so much, was climbing up and down his shirt and cleaning his ears. I can't wait for her to be like that with us! When we went back after lunch she was much more open to us, sitting and letting us rub her tummy. I have no doubt that we will bond quickly!

Im able to take my ekkies out anytime of the day even before sunrise. The only time I can't bring gracie out is if she's eating. Our ekkies loves us so much that they don't mind, never cranky birds as they get plenty of sleep during the day while we work. Birds can learn to adapt to your schedule! So whenever people says they need to get rid of their birds because of schedule change, I don't buy it. As long as you spend time with them even at 2am like I do all the time.
