Sushi, our femme fatale SI Ekkie
Here's a video of our 4 year old Ekkie, Sushi, playing with us after her feast of pineapple-yam curry for dinner--which she actually really loved! She's been just dying to get up on our shoulders, which we don't really want since accidents can happen that way. We've had her since sunday & I have been playing with her since monday afternoon; she's just becoming the sweetest little bird! She'll let me pet all around her & hold her wings, even preen some; then of course is her running to us which is just freakin' adorable!

my nut looks skinny when she is in her investigating mode (what i call up to no good)
if her poops are ok and she is eating no matter how messy (lol) i think its fine, birds do then to do the skinny when un-sure and the tall skinny when alittle afraid

humm pineapple-yam curry sounds good, recipe please lol

Well, she has a vet appointment first thing tomorrow cause her poop is very bright green today & some are just water. She ate some whole grain noodles I handfed her, and a little bit of a kashi bar when she was out with me. I really hope I'm just being an over-concerned mama! We'll see tomorrow, just in case.

And here's the recipe, I usually just taste it often to see how it's going:)

1 can coconut milk
2 cups chicken stock
Lots of madras curry to taste
Some chili powder to taste
3 tablespoons ground ginger
Two pinches of brown sugar
2 large cloves fresh garlic
Handful of fresh cilantro, chopped
2 large yams
1 can chopped pineapple in juice
1 head cauliflower

Add enough olive oil on bottom of big soup pot & heat on low. Add garlic & slightly toast, pour chicken stock in before they brown. Add yam & begin to cook until boiling. Add coconut milk & stir, adding chili & curry powder. Keep adding until the taste is strong, about 4 tbs of curry. Add ginger & stir. Once yams are pretty soft, add cauliflower & pineapple in juice. Cook until tender. Add cilantro & brown sugar at the last minute, stirring & cook until it starts boiling again. Make sure yams are soft before taking off stove. And done!

Cilantro is a herb, sort of like parsley. If your grocery has fresh cut herbs, they may have it.

I'm sure Sushi's ok, she does look like she is settling in great!

No wonder why Sushi's droppings are not right with that sort of food. Honestly she should have a balanced diet.

This link will help with all the foods you can give to your Eclectus.

This is going to sound argumentative but I'm not trying to, just a question:)

Is there something wrong anything that is in the curry? It looks pretty balanced with what else I have been giving her. She gets sprouts & fresh veggies/fruit all day. Besides, everything in the recipe coincides with what the website calls for, even the soft food diet that is 80% of eclectus's diet. She does not get pellets, but just fresh food that may be cooked, such as in the case of the curry. There is nothing unhealthy about this recipe & has protein, vegetables, & fruit categories. Please though, if there is something truely bad for her in the recipe please let me know--I want her to be as healthy as possible.

As far as the kashi bar & whole grain noodles those were just snacks when she was out to play with me. Her lunch was sprouts with zucchini & tomatos with garlic.

Thank you:)

No arguments here & sorry if i offended you. I guess when you breed eclectus you tend to really push a healthy diet for them. I have over the years found that the more fresh foods i feed my eclectus the healther they are & the less i have to visit my Vet.

I would never dream of feeding any of my Eclectus tin foods, I would have thought the tin coconut milk & pineapple, as well as the chicken stock would not be classed as eclectus food. Your recipe sounds good for human consumption though. At the end of the day you feed your bird how you see fit. Just trying to help. :)

lol nut eats curries with us but that is as a treat portion, and mine are slightly less healthy then yours

but it may be to rich for your bird, after reading link from pedro

but i know when i give her over rich foods, her poop is a creamy green, but back to normal within a day, after its passed lol i tend to adjust her intake like i would do with a resident, so that way she does not miss out on family meals, but i do adjust what she gets from them, and have put fresh peas/mash/rice with a smudge of satay sauce etc so it does not look to different, nuts too spoilt, but i do want my son to inherit her lol

also after reading pedro mention of chicken stock, alot of stock have msg/salt content and anything from a tin you need to check the ingredients

The tin can food is a very good point! I'll have to cut up the pineapple myself next time to eliminate that. Is organic baby food alright or should I try pureeing the veggies myself?

Eclectus parrots are healthier on a low nutrient diet than a high one which is why they do so well on healthy human foods such as fruit & veg, sprouts etc...
Finely grated or blended food is one of the easiest ways to get your Eclectus to eat properly. If their least favourite food is blended in with everything else then they consume everything that is given to them. (quote from link lol)

personnally i'd puree myself, to be sure you know exactly whats gone into mix

i think it should be lol and in treat form try it frozen?? nut has this thing for ice cubes lol or ice cream (lick of and thats it!)

nuts like the 2nd child i never had, an i want her to enjoy her food etc but also i need to rein myself back from just giving her treats and junk foods, even though she will throw tantrums over being told NO lol

so be a good idea to not share everything with sushi, or she'll end up being as picky as nut, thought nut won't starve herself, as i have completely cut out bad an gray area foods, the tantrums are well comical, but not nice for nut and she is smart enough to know when foods look different so no fobbin her off lol

Well sharing junk food with Sushi isn't a problem for us; we're health freaks! The worst we ever do is a piece of dark chocolate, which would never go near her! I don't even think there are chips in the apartment!! Haha, she may get a piece of tofu now & then though ;)

Oh and she's going into the vet this monday night for a basic check-up & wing/nail clipping. I'll let everyone know how she is! And expect another video tonight--Sushi's getting a bath!!

hiya.....might want to avoid the tofu with an electus, theres quite a lot of opinion out there that soy products are not very good for them.....
What i do for my boy is cook up a massive lot of soft food mix. Brown rice, chickpeas, lentils, barley etc, tiny cubed sweet potato, then throw in a bag of frozen peas and frozen corn (cools the mix down real fast). Then I bag it up and freeze into 2 day lots.
It makes life a hell of a lot easier. I also supplement with as much fresh, leafy greens, fruit, sprouts, pumpkin seeds etc as he will eat. I feed twice a day - its amazing how much my boy eats but he is young and growing very fast.
But you know, electus's seem to LOVE puree. I mash up sweet potato and for a treat mix in a little seed (just a little). He loves it. Like seriously, LOVES IT. even more than me lol.
Oh and almonds. They LOVE almonds.
Just remember her disgestive tract is designed differently, its efficient - and so she needs a high fibre, not so nutrient rich diet. I avoid pellets with eccies - think theyre a bit much for them.
Always watch the poo! And good on you for taking her to the vet for a checkup. Often by the time you notice they are sick its too late.
And by the way, she is absolutely BEAUTIFUL - such an elegant lady!! Obviously loves you both already. very cute!!

She is really such a sweetie already! Grooming me constantly when I'm on the computer. I understand their dietary needs, it's just getting her to eat the good things!! She seems to eat so little it really is bothering me, but she seems active & curious about everything so maybe she is just settling in. So far, she really likes the sweet potatos too!!

Ava(peach faced lovebird) and my very first bird
Leroy (black headed caique) my little moody bird
Dusty (hahns macaw) my clown
I think the food sounded fine except for the canned pineapple and the chicken stock.
I know our local evil empire (walmart) sells fresh pineapple already cut up so you don't have to do it...I give my birds fresh food whenever possible and then frozen when I can't get good fresh stuff....be sure to read the ingredients on frozen stuff...you would be amazed by the amount of salts and sugars that can be put in that stuff but there are kinds without the extra stuff...just good old fashioned frozen veggies and fruits.
And dare I say you have a "daddy's girl" on your hands....how very cute.
