  • I have a 5 month old Eclectus and he just seems to eat a little bit, the breeder had him on seeds and some fruits and veggies and I'm trying to switch him to all sprouts, fruits and veggies. It just seems like he really doesn't eat much through out the day. As they get older do they eat more? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

The best thing to do is get some scales and weigh him to make sure he is not losing weight.
If he has been used to seeds he might not be keen on giving them up.
What i did was make up a sweet potato mash with peas. then mixed some seed through it (not much, only a teaspoon or so). It helped if it was warm - he would just wolf it down, trying to get to the seed but having to eat the good stuff too. They seem to really like purees and mashes - especially if they are warm and even more if they have seed in them! Then you can just diminish they amount of seed and start putting some sprouts in there.
My boy eats a HUGE amount, but he is older. If you are in doubt take him to the vet.....but weight is a good indication. At that age he should be starting to pack on the bulk, definitly not losing weight.

I make up a soft food mix of barley, b rice, chickpeas, kidney beans etc and feed that along with fruit and veges. I feed twice a day, and try to vary the food - so in the morning he will get soft food with shredded kale or silverbeet, and in the evening sweet potato mash with chopped apple, pumpkin seeds and grapes......And treats like fruit, almonds, etc throughout the day. My boy doesnt get seeds as att now except for training purposes.

Not all eccies are big eaters but mine is. At that age he should be eating quite a lot - mine spends at least 20min at the trough twice a day. How long have you had him for? He may be just suffering new home jitters, but you never know. Is he bright, alert and active? Has his behaviour changed at all? Droppings? Did he have a check up when you bought him? No panting, sitting still all day, anything like that?

I Hope this helped! - once again if you are not sure then take him to the vet. Also check his droppings, they should be normal, green (unless youve been feeding him orange food) and not runny. His vent should be clean and he should be relativly active and alert. Invest in some scales for peace of mind! Its a great way to get an early heads up when something is wrong. Good luck!
