Sushi, our femme fatale SI Ekkie
Because my mother and father don't understand my excited one-sided conversation about Sushi over the phone I need a forum to let out all my love for my ekkie--even if she is extremely lazy.

So it's been about a month with the little lady, who takes more naps then I can count, and every day it's getting better! All my concerns about her being loud in the apartment were unfounded--we've only heard her squawk real loud about five times so far. Other then that, she'll talk around noon for a few hours and then make soft cooing hums for the rest of the day. She still won't talk in front of us, but some of her noises are starting to sound like how I say 'Hi' to her.

We've purchased lots of toys for her, but she doesn't play with any of them. The only toys she'll use are the shreddable ones, which are gone within a day.

Luckily her appetite is perfect now. She'll eat just about anything. The bald patches around her eyes are even growing in now! Her favorites are okra, grapes, spinach & black beans, with her always trying to get some of our coffee.

I just wish she played a bit more; she loves napping & sitting on us as we pet her, but a lot of other birds seem more active. Is she lazy or is that just an ekkie thing?

Lots of love from Maria & Sush-nugget.

Its a ekkie thing lol.

Rani is the same.... She comes to you and then she just wants to chill.... She is so different from the conure i used to have:)

Apparently they like tea and coffee. Rani flys to the dining table in the morning where we have our breakfast. I normally drink tea and she wants some everyday. She actually eats her breakfast on the dining table with us. Pellets soaked in few drops of tea:)

You might want to be careful with the tea and coffee thing, unless it's decaffeinated, caffeine is very bad for birds.

I was just going to comment on the tea & coffee thingy. Not a good idea to give it to them however you can use some herbal teas ONLY but never coffee. If my parrots have breakfast or even dinner with us they are placted on their T stand with their own birdie foods not what i am eating unless of course it's healthy for the bird.

Most eclectus hens are observers, they like to check things out most of the time. They are also closet talkers, always seem to talk a lot when they think your not watching. That's the best time to teach them new words when they are in the talking mood.

The only other thing I ever see her playing with is the big vertical blinds that are right next to her playstand; she'll just knock em back and forth for hours! But other than that, she's just looking around, yawning or sleeping. Such a dolly I have:)

-no parrots yet-
I do have two cats -Riply & Nano bites-
four snakes- china, dip & stick, and Grand Chahee-
That accually sounds like the perfect bird for me, but my two only interaction with ekkies... resulted in me losing a dime sized bit of my scalp, compleat with hair(am fine now). and later on, a vary deeply brused finger and scrapes on my hand from trying to fend off the second bird.

I havent seen any up here during the last 10 years, and I have to say, even though they are a pretty bird, just seeing the red bird brings back old fears.

Is your bird a baby? how well does it get along with family? do you travel with your bird? (camping trips)

Rani mostly eats her pellets with us on the dining table and may be a drop or 2 of tea. I am going to try and tick her tomorrow with water LOL. NO more tea for her:)

I knew you would like ekkies!!! That's why I suggested to you in the first place. I love mine, they chatter all the time, rarely scream! :)

She's just so calm!! It's like she is always doing yoga or something...

And Sushi is about 4 year olds, maybe a smidgen older, but I don't want to ask a lady her age;) Anyways, when we first got her, she did give me a pretty good nip on my finger, but we've had her without any accidents for over a month now! My fiance and her have a little romance going on, so everyone in the house just adores her! As far as taking her on trips, she's liked the car rides we've taken her on, but she isn't one for her harness quite yet. We've gotten it on her successfully but she acted like she was dying. Right now it's hanging in her cage, right next to her food bowl so hopefully she'll get used to it more. Once we can get her in it more often we plan on taking her on trips back up to Michigan and camping with us:) We can't wait to play at the park too!!
