Rhett's new thing is scaring the bejeezus out of me every morning by squaking/screeching at the top of his lungs first thing in the morning. I googled it of course and read that it could be "flock calling" is this good or bad? I don't care if it scares me, I just want to identify the behavior and if it isn't flock calling but instead a stress signal or something like that, then I want to know. He does it after I uncover his cage and open the doors. He climbs right up top and goes at it. I live on 2 acres but I swear the neighbors MUST be able to hear it!

Hehe, it's his 'dawns chorus' otherwise known as flock calling. He's saying good morning to the world and his flock.

Pretty much any bird does the screaming/calls when they 'wake up' (uncovered usually) and around evening time 'before bed' style thing. It's normal, don't be worried. ;)

I doubt he's stressed, he's just doing what birds do... wake up the household/neighbourhood when people are trying to have a lie in :p

Eclectus have a couple of different sounding calls. They have a very loud call with about 6 bursts & then quiet, I seem to think that is a alarm call because my males do it if they get a fright or are startled by another bird flying past. Once the threat has passed they go all quiet again. The contact call is a totally different call but not overly loud, kind of repetiive & annoying. They can keep it up for an hour or more just calling back & forth. That drives me nuts.

I always go & see what all the fuss is when my males start because i class them as not so noisy at all & when they do go off something is normally wrong. Could be just a bird they don't normally see in the yard.

Thanks once again guys! I don't think it's an alarm call, it seems too ritualistic for that. He does a series of different actions beforehand including giving his wings a nice vertical stretch, then the audio rape of my eardrums begins...

So Suebee, this means he is feeling comfortable, or more at ease with his surroundings? If so, he can scream all he wants, my neighbors will just have to deal with it.

Also, we go see his old Vet on Thursday to get nails and beak done. I was able to do a couple of his nails myself, but he stressed out, so I stopped.
