hello all,
Just a query, we have 2 ekkys, both being 2 years old. We have had Jack since he was 14 weeks old , the other only the last 3 months or so. Wondering if anybody elses ekky attacks toes if he is on the floor ? My ekky we have had since a baby , is the one that does it. If he is close enough to anybodys toes he runs like a bull at a gate and gives an almighty bite. Just wondering why and no he has never been stood on or anything like that. So we have no idea why. Our newer parrot Marlie, has been known to go for toes but so far not really bite or anything like Jack. We arent really concerned so much if Marlie is near our feet but if jack is , people have to be warned that he is coming or Jack has to be picked up.
Today he has given me an almighty bite that is bleeding to the top of my foot and I havent a clue why he is sooo quick and fast and adamant in doing this.Everybody here is very aware of him if he is on the floor and removes him.
Does anybody have this occur, its not so much a problem as we can always just move him before he is too close, just wondered if this is normal behaviour ?
Thanks,
Robyn

My OWA will do that sometimes. I'm pretty sure it's terrifying to see humans towering over them & biting toes would be a good warning so they don't get stepped on.

I think it's really very funny when a parrot is chasing someone to bite toes & i am sure the bird thinks so as well. Everytime my neighbour comes over when the Cocky is out on the ground, he goes after her toes & i am sure it's because she makes a fuss. He never does it to anyone else, although he has bitten hubby on the foot a few times. He also reacts & acts like a fool. LOL.

Robyn I would not allow him on the floor at all. I probably never really have that problem as most of the time when my birds are out they hang out on the play stand. I like to be in control of my birds behavior. That way i don't seem to have problems with my lot.

Good luck with sorting it out. Would be interesting to see if you can reinforce a better behavior than nipping toes. :)

Thanks guys , its not a major problem , I tend to have him on the floor when Im home on my own. I put him on the floor because he plays much better on the floor with our other ekky Marlie, they seem to chase each other a bit and they play much better together when they are on the floor, away from me but in eye sight.
Its just if people come home or anything like that , you can tell when he is about to launch.
So probably just a good idea to keep him up high when others are around.
Thanks

The lady who we adopted Mac from told me that he doesn't like being on the floor and when he is, he tries to attack her feet. She warned me that he likes to pinch toes. When we first brought Mac home, he tried that with me and I stood my ground and told him NO in a very loud voice! It startled him to the point, he backed away and then approached my foot again. I reached down and picked him up. So after a couple of instances like that, he now approaches my foot and stands on it wanting to be picked up. He will do everyone who comes to my house the same way. He will walk over and stand on their foot waiting to be picked up.

Mr. Precious loves to nibble on my toes to try to wake me up in the morning. If that fails, he will march up my chest & nibble on my nose until I get up & get him breakfast!

re-homed from rescues both are about 5 years old.
Buddy does this but Marty does not. What makes it really funny is he laughs once he catches someone and has given the bite... doesn't hurt it seems to be more playful.

My U2 will charge like a bull when someone he doesn't know is in his territory and believe me, when they see that beak coming they are running! When that happens, he will slowly stalk them, I'll intervene and put him back on his cage. He's tried this with my feet a few times, not realizing they were mine, I'll sternly, somewhat loudly, say HEY! He'll at that point stop, look up at me and then be mellow. I'm not sure if it's the stern, HEY!, or if he's thinking, 'oh, it's you, miss killjoy!'.

My macaw goes after toes too. Even the dogs have to be aware....lol....The dogs are terrified of Willie when he's on the floor. Willie crawl his way down on the floor on his own then goes after the dogs paws. All the dogs run onto the couch to hide from him...lol...I usually go pick him up and place him on the stand so he would leave the dogs alone....
