Hi guys,
I'm wondering if there are any breeders of Eclectus in or around Ohio? I'd like to find a birdie mentor and pick the brain of someone who has raised these for awhile. Or maybe even not a breeder but a owner who has had a few?
I think I'm in love with the idea of having a Eclectus but I have a couple of concerns, my largest one being that what I've read has said that these guys do not get along well in loud households; well I'm sort of looking for a definition of what loud is...
I have three children ages 12, 10, and 6. My home is not constantly loud but with kids in the house it can get rowdy at times. It is obviously louder around here during summer vacation and on the weekends but during the week while the kids are in school the house is quiet enough to hear a pin drop since I'm always home alone.
My house is on the smaller side situated with my master bedroom, full bath, living room (right outside my bedroom), kitchen, and dining room downstairs. The kids bedrooms and another bathroom are upstairs. My dining room has a door on it and it is the quietest main room of the house which sees the least amount of traffic overall.
My thoughts were that no matter what kind of bird I get I would set up two cages in the house, one in my dining room (larger, main cage), one in my bedroom (night time cage). My thinking is that this set up would allow the future feather baby to have some peace and quiet in the dining room when needed but not to the point of feeling excluded from daily activity and interaction and the night cage would keep him close and not feeling cast aside.
Any thoughts? Could this work? Is there anyone with a Eclectus and kids who can tell me more about to balance them? I've read that when these guys get stressed they can become quiet and withdrawn, less animated, etc. I certainly don't want that!!
I really want to find a way for a Eclectus to fit into my life.

I'd also really love someone who could tell me the cage sizes they use for their birds as well as any good links to online bird stores so I can browse supplies.

Thank you guys!!!
Sincerely,
Jenna

In my opinion if you decide on an eclectus, I believe its best to find a breeder with a great reputation..Unless you really want to rescue.. Keep in mine any eclectus on Craigslist for sale is gonna actually be a rescue.

If you get an older one, I highly recommend that when you find the birdie you want, you request the owner to do a full vet check.

I purchased her but it seriously was a rescue, eclectus need certain foods, if the owner has been feeding them pellets and seeds or seed diet your birdie could have health problems. Also look for nutritional bands on the feathers a poorly fed bird will have these bands on their tail feather for each band thats where they had a nutritional issue. My vet told me those bands where like the rings of a tree trunk they give u an idea of how they have been taken care of.

I took a bird no vet check but i knew she had issues, she started plucking , had nutritional bands and missing feather around the eye..but i got her to the vet asap and got her on meds...she was in a bad spot

Also if you go for a older bird and the owner tell u and even affirms the cage is appropriate for the bird, look at the cage, I got my girl and they told me her cage was big for her, it was actually only appropriate for a couple cockatiels or 1 conure.

In feeding these birds ohhh its the easiest ever, veggies , fruits and if u must feed a pellet get a high quality one. no colored pellets it can mess with them.. my girl is not eating pellets hardly maybe one harrison pellet a day she is eating lots of fresh veggies and fruits and prefers that she only eats the pellet if she runs out of veggies.

For a busy house the females i heard are the best. I heard boys can get stressed in a busy house. I also heard rumors about a female not being an ideal , friendly, cuddly bird.. I am sure some birds no matter gender are like that. But my female eclectus is not this way, she talks alot, whistles , likes to be picked up and held, she also will sit on my chest under a small blankie while i watch TV and she will laugh when i laugh at something on the TV..I have 3 teens, 17,15,13 plus their friends that hobble in. She is in my living room because i noticed she likes attention, but at 9pm i shut the whole living room down, no tv and no lights because they need 10 hours of sleep. its not an issue in my house my kids are older and have tv in their rooms so the living-room is normally empty anyway.

I think the 2nd cage would be awesome if your livingroom is very active in the evening hours.

The eclectus need a cage that is wide, a cage with a play area on top is a plus, my girl loves her play area. I had to get my cage in a snap i found one off Craigslist for 100 bux its a huge cage way to big for her I cannot remember its exact measurements but its prolly on a guess 3 1/2 foot wide by 2 1/2 to 3 foot deep and its a bit taller than be including the play area prolly 6 foot tall.. I know its actually a macaw cage. I can get tons of toys in it and she can move just fine without knocking into the toys but i had to add alot of perches and such so she can move about nicely since her previous owner chopped her wings so bad she drops like a rock..

Thank you a hundred times over for your reply!!! I'm sure I will read and re-read it over several times to make sure it all sinks in. I really had my heart set on a male Ekkie as for some reason I have a horrible time getting along with any female animals... I think I'm too dominant of a personality or something and you get two headstrong females together and its like oil and water. The only female animal in my life I ever had a bond with was a Arabian mare horse when I was a teenager. But I think she was an exception, I had four horses and she was the only girl. Doesn't seem to matter what species of animal it is, over the years we've had everything from horses, goats, chickens, ducks, swans, geese, conures, dogs, cats, mice, hamsters, sugar gliders, rabbits, guinea pigs, even reptiles... We used to foster for a rescue plus we had our own farm at one point. And just never could fall in love with or bond tightly to any female critter other than the horse. Just got to the point where I've stopped trying because it usually equals heartbreak and disappointment for everyone involved or animals that my husband ends up having to be the primary caregiver in some cases which stinks. Ironically, I don't often get along with many human females either and the vast majority of my good friends are men... *shrugs*
I've got it pretty well narrowed to either an Eclectus or a B&G Macaw those are the two breeds that make my heart skip a beat lol. Now I just need to figure out which is the better fit!
Thanks again so much for taking the time to reply!

When we first got Puffin my youngest was 17 and there was not a day when she didn't have at least two friends over. On weekends there were closer to four or five and they would all congregate at our house most of the weekend and they sure weren't quiet!

Add to that an older son and his mates watching football or him playing lay station and it makes for a loud house. Far from not liking it, Puffin joined in!

If it got too noisy Puffin just lets out a screech and they would tone it down.

It was quite funny today. Hubby was watching football and Puffin was screeching, hubby told him to shush but he kept going so hubby covered his cage. All went quiet for about five minutes. I was upstairs putting my makeup on as we were going out soon and I heard Puffin saying " Mate ( what I call hubby), Mate, awwww dad, dad...aww come on dad" and I laughed so much my mascara started running!

I think each bird is different but if a young bird comes into your home I think they get used to how the house is where maybe an older bird may have a problem. We got Puffin at 12 weeks and he is a happy parrot.

Eclectus Female - Audrey.

Mini - Budgie, RIP gorgeous girl.
In my experience with Audrey, she is fine in a loud, busy house. I only have one child, but me, my daughter and my partner are all pretty loud people, we are always mucking around and being silly and singing, its just a LOUD house lol. Audrey is fine, and she fits in and likes to join in on the noise, as we get louder, she gets louder too. I think that male eccys aren't as good in loud households, but it could depend on each bird. I guess if it becomes to overwhelming in the house when everyone is home, you could always move the bird to the cage in your room for some quiet time. You could also make sure you are getting an eccy from someone who has kids or other animals that are loud, so they are used to a bit of noise when they come to you? Sorry I can't be of any more help lol. :)

If you have three kids and your house can get roudy at times, which I'm sure it cane with three children. Then I would highly recommend a female eclectus. Males don't do well in roudy situations.

Ruby doesnt mind a busy loud house. I have a Hubby and 4 sons (ages 20, 17, 14,10 ) plus the constant friends in and out. She sometimes will make peacock sounds if she doesnt like a particular person or amount of people around. She seems to tolerate children better than adults. She will allow strange children to pick her up but will bite strange adults if she doesnt like them. She seems to pick who she likes and doesnt. If the boys get to wrestling in the house she will verbally tell them to " stop it " or " no no bad boys ". Ruby's cage is quite large about 5 foot tall by 3 feet wide and located in our family room. When her cage was in a less traffic room, she was unhappy.
