Female Red Sided Eclectus
i have recently perched my 11 weeks old male eclectus and it doesnt seem like his posture is right. His not groping onto the perch tight, seems like his feet are straight sometimes.

I never realised it untill recently, he doesnt seem very active and his wings looks floppy. His feet doesnt seem like its groping on the perch probaly. Is he sick or is he jst lazy??????

But when its feeding time, he squawks and runs to me and looks very alert and not tired/lazy. He walks fine and even jumps on the foam box that he sleep on and use it as a perch when its feeding time.

Ive got a 15 weeks old female and shes the very opposite to him, shes active alert, and walks around the house looking for me.

Any suggestions to whats wrong with him??:red1::green2:

Hmm, I'm not too sure why he would do such behaviors... I've never heard of any other instances like that. However, I do notice in the food bowl that there's a lot of seed and colored pellets. I know that such a diet like that can cause wing flipping and toe tapping among eclectus and definately cant be very nutritional for a young, growing ekkie. Maybe if you change his diet to a lot of fruits and veggies and offer 10% of non dyed pellets and seeds. As for the seed mix, offer seeds mixes for small hookbills, there are no sunflower seeds and contain a lot of safflower, pumpkin and millet... Which are low in fat and are the best type of mixture for young eclectus. I like to offer a few pitches of the seed mix, along with one pinch of TOP (totally organic pellets) and a wide variety of fresh/dried/frozen fruits and veggies. I know I may be going a little over board... But my baby only receives 100% organic fruits and veggies. I know that's not necessary as long as they are washed thoroughly. Try the diet change and see if he does better on it, I don't think lameness and lethargy is normal at all...

Oh and most importantly, if I were you I would make an appointment to an avian vet ASAP. It can be other underlying causes that arent noticeable to our eyes: disease, virus, injury, etc.

Best of luck, I hope everything goes well for your baby boy.

For things like this we can't help very much, it's best to call your vet and see if they think your bird should be brought in.

At the shop where I got Neytiri they had a baby male ekki. He wouldn't move or do a thing. Very laid back. The owner said that males are opposites to the females and just lazy. When in doubt ask a vet. This is just relaying of what she told me.

Rosie i ment to answer this last night. I have a male eclectus bub around the same age as your baby & at 11 weeks they do act as your baby is. Your hen is a whole month older so is way more advanced than your little guy.

As long as your baby is eating well, droppings a looking normal for a chick on formula, his eyes are bright & his feathers are beautiful & glossy. If he was sick he wouldn't be interested in food at all, look sleepy & not show any interrest in anything to much. He would also be grumpy.

Baby boy eclectus are usually a little slower than the hens, IMO. The hen will gobble their baby food like theres not tomorrow & the males eat like they have all the time in the world. Usually when feeding a baby male i have to keep heating the food up because he takes his time to eat.

If your hand rearing food doesn't have probiotics in it go buy some & use it everyday. It's great stuff & really helps your birds immune system develop.
