I have a 4 month old male ekkie and when I offer a treat he just stares at it. Is he still too young to take treats? How small should the treat be? I have read most people use pine nuts, walnuts, and almonds for treats. Do I offer the whole nut or little pieces? Also, do I offer the treat with my hand open or with only 2 fingers?

Congrats and welcome to the forum.

Does he like the treats you are trying to give him? Will he eat them if you put some in his food bowl?

If the answer is no to the above then you have to find something he likes.

Are you giving him a treat just to give him a treat or are you using the treat as a reward for training.
Only give him small pieces so he will wan more.

I only give Abby and Solomon Treats when they do something I am trying to train them to do.

they do get snacks when I get home from work.

Hope this helps...
Post some pics... we love pics.. :D

At four months he is a little young he most likely doesn't see what your offering him as food. I would try this; first thing in the morning when he will be most hungry (after the morning poop) place him on a small table top perch and sit down to your morning breakfast (fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, a little granola ect.) I know it sounds healthy, well too bad, join the rest of us who eat better since we have birds, cause our babies need to learn to eat good things and learning by watching us, and you offering some of your breakfast to them from your plate. Remember to create some drama over everything you offer to them. I hope this gives you some ideas on how to get your fid to try new foods. Keep us updated on your progress.

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm really wanting to give treats to build his trust. I've had him for one month and he is still a little nervous or scared of me :( Sometimes he tries to nip when I get him out of his cage, but never nips once I have him out. I guess I have to learn what he really likes first then use that as the treat. I know he does like green beans, peas, kale, blue berries, and his zupreem fruit blend. Most of all the other fruits and veggies I have tried he just throws them out.
