Hi Friends,

I just got a 1 year old SI Female Eclectus named Viva. I had a GW Macaw, but decided to trade for an Eclectus because it was a better fit for our family. I have two cages, one is an indoor cage and the other is outside. I am planning on letting Viva spend time outside in her large cage (which is 4'x4'x6') when it cools down a little.

But I'd like to get a new indoor cage. I really like the corner cages with the play gym on top. Viva will be kept in her indoor cage for 6 hours while I'm at work and then at nighttime when she sleeps. When I'm home she's either with me or on her other playstand. So she has adequate time outside of the cage.

What are your experiences with corner cages? And any particular brand? The cage she is in right now is rusting at the bottom and paint is chipping, so I am very concerned. Are there any particular brands you'd suggest? Some places online sell discounted cages, but I'm weary about the quality.

Thank you for your kind and helpful suggestions.

I have always liked the corner cages but never had one. Im sure someone on here can help, Congrats on Viva (cute name btw). I have two King Cages and they have held up very well. None of my birds have been bar chewers so the only peeling I have had was on the tray which they dont have access too. Im not sure they have the corner cages and they are kinda pricey but they hold up and are safe. Here is the link.

I don't have a corner cage, but here's some cons I've heard about them.

They are corner cages. This means that they only fit in corners.

Corner cages have two pans. This means extra work keeping it clean.

Since it has two pans, there are more metal bars in the bottom where the birds could crap on.

Some corner cages have rounded fronts. This can make perches, toys and dish placement within the cage difficult.

I have heard of some people who love them! I wouldn't get one myself, but that's just me. I hate, hate, hate the tiny little corner cages (meant more for small/medium sized birds - not the large parrot corner cages) as well as those with rounded fronts! One of the potential problems with some cages are the "V" shaped bars. If the bird has the ability to get their head, wing or even foot in the larger area of the "V" and slide it down to the narrower part, they could potentially seriously injure themselves.

Kings Cages does have corner cages!

I'm sure there are others out there... but those are the ones I could think of off the top of my head.

Corner cages have the least efficient use of space. Your bird will be able to do more in a rectangular cage and outfitting it will be easier.

As for cage brand, Kings is definitely the way to go. I have 2 of the 36x28 victorian play top cages and they are top quality.

Absolutely stay away from A&E cage. I was sent 3 new cages that were already significantly rusted and not bird safe. It was one right after the other as I kept demanding a replacement with each defective cage I got. At one time, I had 3 40x30 defective cages in boxes in my basement. The 3rd one was supposedly inspected by John Lance himself (A&E President), yet had rust pouring out of the hollow frame material. A&E Cage actually walked away from the situation and I had to dispute it with my credit card to get a refund....successfully too. I had to lug 500 pounds of cages to the dump to scrap them because A&E promised to retrieve them and never did. This is a 100% true story. Worst retail buying experience ever.

hello,
i loooveeee my macaws corner cage.. there is heaps of room, and loads of places to put toys... and it makes him actually move around to different parts to play.. there are 4 bowls which are all easily accessed..
it is alot bigger than the rectangular ones that they sell for macaws here, and he doesnt mind spending time in it playing with all his toys..
yes, it does have 2 trays to clean.. but its not that hard. you just change the newspaper and scrub down then grates... takes about 5-10 mins.. its easy.. tray comes out.. replaces newspaper :)
he only goes to the toilet in one little area in the bigger tray part,, such a good boy :p so the other tray gets cleaned because he drops pellets/food on the floor :)
this one also has a little door at the top, so he likes to sit on that as well..
its sizing is: 185cm(H)x155cm (W) x123cm(D)
i have attached a pic :) note: i put the rope in there yesterday to see how he liked it so its very messily knotted :p and i have to move one of the foraging toys as i hung a natural toy up yesterday and didnt have time to move it!!
he was eating breakfast when i took this ;)

Thank you all for the suggestions, I'm definitely going to take a look at the King cages. I'm fortunate to have a large outdoor cage, but I'd like something nice for the inside too. All your comments are very helpful.
