New to the forum but I'm a huge fan of all the support of forum communities.

So after doing a ton of research on which bird breed would be the best fit for our family we have come to the eclectus. Where we are stuck is on which sub species is right for us. We were first set on the Solomon due to the great temperament but we like the fact that the red sided and aru are a bit larger and I've heard they are a bit more talkative. Thoughts?

Also we are on a hunt for a great breeder that takes time to hand rear and socializing.

I'm open to all suggestions. We want to make sure we make the right choice.

Screech - Sun Conure
Gitana - Eclectus
Now this is something I read, I do not know if its fact. I read once that the bigger breeds Vos and red sided are the more talkative breeds. Now again I do not know how factual this is. I have a red sided.

I do know my Gitana will talk her head off though and likes to mimic, talk and make fart and burping noises she laughs alot to..She can sing jingle bells and yells Merry Christmas even though its not that time of year yet LOL Then again she has her quiet times this past week she would only utter good morning and good night when she wanted to. Yesterday she talked up a storm practicing her vocabulary then today all she wanted to say was hey baby and Hi Hi lol

I would think it is hard to decide on sub-species, because the only ones really easy to find are Red-Sided, Vosmaeri, and Solomon. I would try to find a good breeder first, and see what sub-species they are breeding.

Finding a good breeder is also tough. But I did find one I feel ok with and she has red sided, arus and Solomon. No I need to see which one works for us.

Stop worrying about the sub-species. All Eclectus are wonderful birds with great temperment as long as they are well socialized first. Also They all talk up a storm, which starts out being soooooo cute. But after a while, you say to yourself, will this bird ever shut up! My birds favorite phrase as well as game is Peek a Boo and guess what he repeats constantly ALL DAY LONG some times dozens of times in a row. My wife thanks me all the time for teaching our eclectus that little nugget.:) So be careful what you wish for.

I would much rather have a bird that is fairly quiet, easy going, very social with everyone and fairly cuddly. You have to be very watchful with Eclectus when they reach the hormonal age, which can be around 3-4 years of age. Males will try to hump or mate with what ever female who lives in the house with you and if you interupt their mating ritual, they can get down right nasty with you. Mac bit my ear piercing my ear just above the earlobe, just because I removed him from my wifes hand where he was trying to get frisky with her.

I have a Solomans Island Female. She talks, and talks, and talks some more and She sings you are my sunshine. The talking isnt really species or sub species specific, but more on how much interaction the bird recieves. Grey's are known for their speaking ability, but many do not speak at all. Purchasing a bird for its speech is setting yourself up for disappointment. Parrots are just like small children, the more you teach them, the more they learn. Some just have nothing to say at all. You need to be prepared that your baby may never speak, and be ok with that. Ruby has a vocabulary of well over 100 words, but she will only speak to the members of our household. Strangers think we are liars about her speaking ability, because she just stares at them silently. Ruby speaks in 2 different voices mine ( female ) and Hubby's. She also spys on phone conversations and repeats them at will. Thats how I busted my teenage son for planning to go somewhere he wasnt supposed to, Ruby repeated his phone convo. Ruby is never alone, as I have 4 sons and home school 2 of them. If noone is to be home, Ruby goes with us, that is why she is so vocal. I have 10 parrots some speak some dont. My female Zon speaks but not the male. My male blue crown conure speaks, but not the female. My Alexandrine speaks alot ( anything he hears he says ) but my suns dont say a word. It all depends on the bird, as they all have different personalities.

My Solomon female talks up a storm. Not as much as she used to the first few weeks I adopted her, but now she chooses when she wants to which is usually during a movie or when im playing my Xbox360. If there is alot of noise going on, she talks and whistles. When someone is doing laundry or vacuming the floor, doing dishes.....she dosent shut up haha. She knows quite a few words.

do you want a companion? or do you want a bird that will talk? some parrots that may be able to talk great may never talk. you have to be accepting of whatever personality you get. eclectus parrots are a rival of the african grey, meaning they are just as smart and their vocab is similar. the difference between the eclectus and the african grey is that an eclectus can bond with more than one person and not have a "fave" while most AG seem to be a one person parrot. but then again, every parrot has its own personality. most eclectus parrots are quiet (excpet when talking) and are smart and cuddley. some of them may begin talking at a couple months of age. you will have a lifetime companion goodluck ;)

Breed of the Eclectus is a small issue. In fact, if you are choosing a Male (the more timid and therefore debatebly more pet friendly of the two) than the breed is nearly impossible to determine unless you choose a professional Ekkie specific breeder.

Females are the dominant of the sex and therefore more aggressive and territorial.
Solomon Islands are the most common and calmer breed - Said to be the most timid.
Vosmeris are the rarest and liveliest breed - Said to be the best talker and learners.

These are of course guidelines and proper training can overcome any of these small breeding differences. My Vosmeris Male is as gentle as could be, never bites, and is willing to run across the room to step-up after only a month. But he is also so quiet.

Thanks for the helpful post Jess! Looks like we have settled on eggs-otic parroting up north. I just liked how helpful Steve and Paul have been. Plus their reviews were stellar.
