Hello everyone,

I'm new to these forums. I've been thinking about getting an Eclectus for a little while now. Been trying to read as much as possible, and of course, start to save!

I was wondering if this cage would be suitable for one?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Bird-Parrot-Cage-Cockatiel-Conure-Large-32-x20-x53-/260493664361

The only thing I wasn't sure about was the width and bar spacing. I've never owned a bird before so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks! :green2:

Not sure why the link isn't working...it seems to be adding extra text to my link. Probably best to copy and paste the link from my post.

Agree with Wenz that the link does not work although I believe this is the cage you're looking at. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Bird-Parrot-Cage-Cockatiel-Conure-Large-32-x20-x53-/260493664361

If I am correct that this is the cage you're inquiring about I'd say it is not appropriate for an Eclectus. The bar spacing would be fine but the bar size itself is not large enough for a beak the size of an eclectus. Additionally, yesterday I was reading that an Eclectus needs a large cage: http://www.eclectusparrots.net/info.html

It works by copying and pasting it into the browser:)

I would say that particular Cage is a bit too small for an Ekkie... The minimum you need is 36" Wide and even bigger if you have the room. They also need quite a bit of height as Ekkies love to climb up and down the bars.

Thank you, I will keep looking! If anyone has links to appropriate cages that would be very helpful. I live in Canada but I can try and find something similar. I'd like to know roughly how much I'll need to save up for the cage.

Also another question I had was about the length of time an Eclectus can be left alone. I wouldn't be getting one until I land a full-time job (I'm a recent grad), living alone. If I'm working 8 or 9 hours a day is this too long to leave one? If there's ample stimulation in its cage? Or are these birds the type who really can't be left alone for more than a few hours? The last thing I want is to come home to a depressed bird plucking its feathers!

I think they're incredibly cute, smart, and friendly but I want to make sure it would be the right bird for me.

No, that cage is too small, look at the bottom of the Ebay page where it states the types of birds that cage is good for.

I have a 40x30 cage with 1" bar spacing and it's plenty big enough for my Eclectus. I have read that it's recommended to get the biggest cage you can afford to buy at the time because by the time you fit the bird and the toys in the cage, it will not seem as big.

I would also highly recommend getting a cage with a playtop on it. My bird loves to play on the top of his cage.

Thank you for your reply.

I found two that I like that are under the Eclectus category...what do you think of these? I like the play-top one and I could probably hang some toys from the perch up there.

Looks like I'll be saving for awhile! :)

I always recommend to purchase as big a cage as you can afford & will fit into your home. I have the cage in your first post & find it is suitable for an eclectus, i use them for weaning cages. I also have the A19 cage in your post. I like the bar spacing to be 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Have had a few nasty accidents where the wing gets caught in the bars.

Here is Mac's cage and playstand. His travel cage is on the floor in front of his Playstand. He uses it to come down and walk around the house.
