Hi everyone,

I was just curious to know what the right age is roughly for an eclectus parrot to be sold?

thanks,

Ashleigh.

I got pickle after he was fully weaned. I swear the guy said he was about four months, but when i went to go figure out his birthday my mum insists he said 8 months. (I think she just misheard but she is under the impression it was 4 months with birdy parents and 4 months with the breeder feeding... but that doesn't seem like the right amount of time to me).

Also there was a thread recently about weaning and somebody said they weaned by 4 months...

Unless you have experience at hand-feeding un-weaned birds, wait until your future feathered friend is fully weaned & playing on its own. Some recently weaned chicks will regress after moving to their new home & require additional hand-feeding. This could be up to 4 times a day, so if you work & would not be able to meet the bird's required feeding schedule, opt for an older bird.

I received Nalani unweaned. She was 8 weeks old when I brought her home. She was given 3 feedings a day till she was 10 weeks old. After which I continued to offer her hand feeding formula 2x a day until a month ago. So it took her 5 months total for her to become fully weaned. It really depends on the bird. I know that there are some breeders that will wean an eclectus at 12 weeks and sell them. However, I suggest finding a breeder that will let the bird wean itself off the formula instead of rushing the process. Otherwise you may end up with "weaned" bird that is still actually unweaned. However, I have heard that most eclectus wean at the age of 12-14 weeks. Nalani took 20, it really depends on the individual bird.

Hi everyone,

thanks! No I wasn't planning on getting an unweaned baby, that was the reason i asked the question. I just wanted to see what age is common for them to be weaned by.

Kind regards,
Ashleigh.
