Toaster Oven

Hi all,

I was wondering if you can recommend a toaster oven that's safe for use with a parrot? I have been looking at stainless steel ones, but I'm not sure if the pan is stainless steel or not.

Any help would be appreciated I live in Canada, so looking to buy from a store here instead of online.

I don't any recommendations off-hand, but I would suggest contacting the manufacturer and asking if their toaster oven contains PTFE.

Good idea. I called Black & Decker about their toaster ovens. The guy said they "have some sort of coating but it's not Teflon". I asked if they could tell me what the coating is, and he said "everytime we send off this question it comes back unknown."

Clearly I won't be buying Black & Decker!

I did some more Googling and see that Waring Pro is supposed to be Teflon free. Unfortunately none of the stores in Canada seem to carry them.

If any Canadians have a Teflon free toaster oven please let me know which one you use. I don't even own a bird yet but I want to make sure everything I buy now is safe.

I have a Cuisinart stainless steel toaster oven that as far as I know is teflon/ptfe free. I can't find any mention of nonstick coating in the manual anywhere, but I guess that's no guarantee. I rarely use it though, and my bird is in the opposite end of the house as well.

I think I've got a Cuisinart Panini Grill out in my shed... and it definitely contains PTFE!!!!! But I know that not all Cuisinart products contain PTFE... so it's possible that their toaster oven doesn't. I haven't looked into it myself.

Teflon is only bad if used at very high temperatures, I don't think a toaster oven is going to be used at those temps, and if you get one with a timer it can't be left on accidently

After more research I found the Waring Pro TC0600 is PTFE free and it's Stainless Steel. No companies seem to offer it in Canada but I did find one online that's in Canada! If anyone's interested, it's this one: Buy the Waring Pro Stainless Steel Convection Toaster Oven at TigerDirect.ca

I'm going to call the company to double check but all reviews confirm it's safe.

I got an e-mail back from the company who said:

Please be advised that nono of our toaster ovens is free PFOA/PTFE but they all comply with the Canadian Regulations and are completely safe to use.

I'm curious why all online websites claim the model I posted is definitely PTFE free but then the company says it's not. Does that mean toaster ovens are completely out then for parrot owners? I can't find any others that claim to be PTFE free.

I have been researching toaster ovens. I have a conure. Waring Pro TCO600 is an all stainless steel inside and outside product. You can find it on Amazon. I haven't yet found a regular toaster with similar credentials.

Toaster Ovens to my knowledge are fine outside of the first couple of uses when the coatings are burned off from the factory. Keep it near an open window for first like 10 uses, and otherwise simply do not have bird in same room when in use. Should be fine.

I did much research before making a purchase of a convection toaster oven... almost all seem to have non-stick components. The Cuisinart Convection toaster oven has silicone lining. I've been using it over six months without incident to my birds- a Macaw, Cockatoo, and Cockatiel.

In my research, I found that there is a product called Xylan-s, it is silicone easy release coating. It sells right next to other non-stick coatings with other product names, but they all contain PTFE.

While it is true that PFOA is to be discontinued by end of 2014, PTFE will still be around, and it is the problem.

There is also a bit of info concerning Durastone II, I spoke with customer service of the oven maker, and they said that it is the original Durastone that was toxic... PTFE was encapsulated into the ceramic during the enamel process. This is not supposed to be the case in Durastone II.
It is again, PTFE free according to the manufacturer.

Hope this helps save some time for other concerned bird keepers.

KitchenAid has a model that's Teflon Free and bird safe.
