We have a new male eclectus and have had him for the past couple of days, and he just started screaming earlier on today. We've been picking him up, putting him in his cage and covering him with a sheet, and leaving him there for about half an hour. Whenever we go up to take him out again and he screams we leave him alone for longer, when he doesn't we talk to him and take him downstairs. But once downstairs again he'll start screaming and we have to repeat the process.

Is this the right way of approaching this? Will he understand?

Update: He's been in the cage for around 3 hours now with no attention, but he's still screaming when we walk into the room and when he hears us. I'm beginning to feel bad about leaving him alone after only a day with us but I also don't want to encourage this behaviour.

the problem is that he doesn't shut up for long enough for us to reward him. when he's quiet and we begin to talk to him and give him treats, he'll just start screaming again.
it's like he screams when he HAS attention as well, it's non-stop

he also doesn't know us well enough to be comfortable with us handling him

What about putting the screaming on a cue or reinforcing other sounds? Would either of those options be possible?

I will try putting it on cue,
he doesn't make any other sounds, except chattering at night in his cage before he sleeps

I am just now seeing this post. How old is he? Do you know much about his past? Eclectus are sensitive, could he be calling for someone he might miss, another bird or past owner? In my experience a happy eclectus doesn't scream a whole lot unlike cockatoos and amazon that will have a go at it sometimes for the sheer joy of it.:D

Are you feeding him plenty of fruits and veggies? The only time mine get even slightly rowdy is if I am late with their breakfast. Please tell us more about your boy and remember that everything is new and frightening to him right now.
