HELP!!! Moving internationally with birds

Hi all,
I have a 10 month old Eclectus parrot,... He is my baby and I love him with all my heart... My husband is in the army and It is starting to sound like we will be sent to Germany in march 2015... We are very excited about it, but I am extremely terrified about moving my drogo.....

Has anyone imported birds to Germany from America. I can't leave him behind. I am a little worried because he isn't banded but I intend to get him microchipped....

HELP!!!!!!!!

Yes, I've flown to Germany with our Cockatiel back in 1996. She wasn't banded either. We needed a health certificate, nothing more.

Now, getting the bird back into the US will be a bit more difficult because he is not banded. I'm sure a microchip will facilitate matters greatly.

In my case I needed another health certificate, and I needed to set up an appointment with the Import/Export Vet (we flew into JFK) who looked Sparky over. Back then this "check" cost us $150.00.

Please check with German import laws to make sure things haven't changed. Let me see if I can find a website for you.

I don't think Eclectus are endangered hopefully it will be easy...
Was your bird able to fly in cabin with you or did he have to go under the plane?

Yes, Sparky flew inside the cabin. Let me see if I can find a picture to what carrier I had her in.

No, Ekkis are not endangered, so you needn't worry there.

Where in Germany are you going to be stationed? I know my son would LOVE to get stationed there one day. (I was born and raised in Germany, fell in love with a US soldier...and the rest is history....

Sounds like Wiesbaden... we wont know for sure till October, but I have to start the research/preparations now because ill be lost if I cant take him.... I actually have 4 of those carriers hahahah... they were on sale for 8$ each at our px a couple months ago...

My husband is Hungarian, and was adopted and brought here when he was 10. He speaks german fluently and Germany was always his dream station. We were told it was never going to be an option so I got my birds. Now it is an option and I have to get things situated to bring him if we go.... we will be importing Drogo, (maybe lili-cockatiel but her breeder is willing to hold her for us for the 3 years) and our Viszla, Csilla)

Yeah, I agree. Coming back to the states with a bird will be more problematic than leaving the states for Germany with a bird.

Will I be able to bring him back with me?
Germany is not an option unless I can bring him there and bring him back when our tour is over.

You need to make sure you can document that he was captive bred in the USA, get a vet certificate, and he'll probably have to go through quarantine coming back. (Sometimes they let you quarantine with a private vet. Ask about it.)

So, the big thing is DOCUMENT everything!

But as a general rule, you can bring in two pet birds even if they were acquired from overseas anyway... (with restrictions on captive bred birds for most Cities listed birds.) It's just SOOOO much easier with traceable breeder/vet records!

He goes to the vet regularly here and we will micro chip him before leaving. What other things should I document.

Well, that's really the main thing right there. Get a copy of his vet records, and a hatch certificate if you've got it. Then you should be golden...

How do I get a hatch certificate?

I emailed the breeder (who doesn't even remember drogos birthday so I had to make an approximate one up from how old he told me he was.... And this is what I got back....

ALOHA ARIEL. Don't have a certificate !! You will have to contact a DVM for that !!!

but I'm already in love with the bird so I guess I'll find a way to deal with it. Hopefully a micro chip and vet records will be good enough since there aren't wild eclectus in Hawaii he can't be wild caught.

Don't even worry about the hatch certificate. Just have the breeder write you a letter, stating that he was captive bred, what type of bird, and his sex.

I remember having to take CLEAR photos of Sparky, and on the back I wrote her hatch year, where she was hatched, and who her breeder was. My vet then signed and stamped the photos.

You WILL be able to bring him back to the US, don't drive yourself crazy now.

NO! He will NOT have to be quarantined. My Sparky was NOT banded, and it was a piece of cake getting her back to the US.

NO! He will NOT have to be quarantined. My Sparky was NOT banded, and it was a piece of cake getting her back to the US.

Well, that's a military exemption then... cuz ours did! AND MAN WERE THEY EVER PISSED OFF ABOUT IT WHEN THEY GOT OUT OF QUARANTINE!!!

This health certificate must be obtained prior to departure from the United States and must include a leg band or tattoo number.

It won't be a problem getting this health certificate from a US vet, especially because the Army provides service members with an American Vet (stationed in Germany).

Now I get it. Ours ORIGINATED overseas... (Venezuela) THAT'S WHY! Thank you. I guess I didn't understand the procedure. I was thinking that all birds have to go into quarantine on their return.
