Jasper (6yr old Solomon Island Eclectus Parrot)
I finally got Jasper on Saturday! What a sweetheart, he is so adorable. Once I transfer all the pictures from my camera I'll share :) Every time he stretches he makes this cute baby noise, it's so funny.

With that being said I have some bad news I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with :( I was trying to get vacation time in last month to go away for a week before I got him, but sadly coordinating with my fiance (who lives in another city) turned out to be a lot harder. The only time he could get is Sept 12-19.

I'm heartbroken thinking about leaving him already. I took him for his first vet visit last night (he decided he didn't need ANY tests b/c the breeder guaranteed their breeding pair was negative for all 4 common ones), and I talked about having him boarded there while I'm away.

I'd have to board him from the 11th to 20th because of flight times. That's a week and 2 days where I won't be with him :( Also, they told me they can't take him out of the cage while he's there b/c they'll have other animals.

I don't know anyone in Montreal and I'd really rather leave him with family but they're in Ottawa and I'm not sure they'd be comfortable with a fairly big parrot (at that point for 2 weeks since my fiance only comes here on weekends).

I don't know what to do. Should I cancel my holiday? I feel awful.

I know how you feel. I am going away for over 2 weeks in September and I dread boarding my 2 birds. I know I will miss them terribly, but I do trust the boarder as they are also the breeder where I got my birds. Like you, I have no one to babysit for me. I don't like the idea of paying more than the price of one of the birds to board them but I have no choice and am willing to pay it for good and trustworthy care. When I got my birds I knew there would be times when we would be separated for short periods of time occasionally. That's life.
Whether or not you decide to cancel your vacation is of course your choice, but I have decided not to set that precedent. No one can tell me I am an irresponsible pet owner. My birds have great cages, the best foods, and all the time and love anyone can give a beloved pet, but I simply cannot let them 'control' me :)

I just went away back to the UK for a week and left Sootie at her A-vet. I was dreading taking her in, because she's never been away from me and I thought she would freak out.

Well, when I got her there, the first thing she did was start shouting at the other birds and trying to get their attention. She didn't even notice when I handed her over.

And when I went to pick her up, the vets and assistants cooed over how good she was. She had a great time, being in a new environment with a bunch of other birds. It wasn't worth the worry!

I really think it's more stressful for us than it is for them. If I were you I'd keep your vacay and let your birdie have his summer camp ^_^

Thanks EnglishMuffin, that makes me feel better about boarding my 2 birds. I never considered they may like the company. One good thing is they will be being handled by people who have handled them in the past before I got them, which was only the middle of June :)

Congrats on your new bird!!! I can't give suggestions on to board or not because I have never been in that situation.

Actually today I had to take her back to the vet for bloodwork relating to her health certs for moving to the UK and when she realised where we were going she really perked up and started peeping at all the boarding birds in the vet's office, haha! She was less than impressed coming back this time after having her first needle :(

Thanks everyone that really helps. What breaks my heart is knowing he WON'T be taken out of his cage for 8 days. They'll just change his food/water each day and that's it :(

I talked with my parents last night and they're considering looking after him for me. Because my fiance only comes here on weekends Jasper would have to go back home the weekend before we leave for our holiday, and then he wouldnt' be able to bring him back until the following weekend - meaning Jasper would be with them for THREE WEEKS.

Do you think he would be ok being there for 3 weeks? Will he forget me? What I've taught him so far?

Yes, the vet said they'd have their food/water changed but they can't take him out because they have other animals there. Boarding for them is strictly that :(

According to my breeder's website, this IS the avian vet :(

But my parents said they'll be able to look after him for me :) I'll be without him for 3 weeks though because of getting him there/back but happier knowing they'll be taking him out!
