hi i am a new mom to an adult male eclectus named koah. he is a doll. he is a little bald. his owners died and he went into morning and he didnt have anyoen to go to. so he went into a shelter where he plucked all of his feathers and was completly bald. he is doing much better now and has stopped plucking. he is a sweet heart. he doesnt like to get scritches yet. but i feel with time he will love them. he is hand shy but is already coming around. he talks alot and i love it. he is so funny and says so many things he is just to cute. oh and i am a new eclectus mommy but i have several birds now and have done alot of research on the species. so i do know how to take care of them and i know about their diets. so he is in good hands. but i dont know everything and i really like to learn new things. so im here to do just that.
smile.gif
.
i do have a question though and that is about his band. i have no clue how old he is. his band reads: ABR 87 301. if anyone can tell me about his age or anything else about his band i would really appreciate it. his band is blue. but very faded. i was told they think he is around 20. but no def answeres. i will try and get some pics of him when i can.
i am a huge animal lover and when i say huge i am not kidding. i take in all types of animals and am the unofficial animal shelter of my neighborhood. lol. anything thing and everything finds its way here. lol.
i currently have
2 sugar gliders- rescues
1 hedge hog- rescue
4 parakeets- rescue
1 african senegal -rescue
1 half moon conure- rescue
2 degus - rescues
2 hamsters - rescues
1 ferret - rescue
all of those were given to me by others who could no longer keep them or couldnt afford to take them to the vet and were sick and almost dying. all of which are now very happy and very healthy.
the others i have which include
1 indian ring neck i hand fed since 3 weeks old.
20 turantulas
10 chihuahuas
1 chinese crested
1 american bulldog
1 pit mix
1 ball python
all of these animals are my babies and are in my home and with me at all times. i dont believe in kennels so they come and go as they please in my home. i have a dog door built into the side of my hosue so they are free roam of the house and yard. please no negative comments as i will fire right back. i have a very strong love for my animals and i dont apprecaite rude commenst when someone doesnt actually no me or has ever been to my home.
if you were to walk into my house it is clean and has no smell of animals. my bird and small aninmal cages are cleaned every other day and all my dogs go outside to potty. i do breed chihuahuas which is why i have so many but all of my dogs are my pets and part of my family before anything else. their health, safety, and happiness comes before anything. if you would like to see some of my dogs you can visit my website and see for your self. but i wont post it on here because i have yet to read the rules on that. so you can pm me if you would like to veiw it.
anyways. as you can see i am a HUGE animal lover. lol

Welcome to the forum.
Wow what a menagerie! There is a section in the photo gallery for non-bird photos.

I don't know much on bands but I think 87 would be the year your Ecky was born. I recently adopted a Sulfur Crested, we have no idea about her age, not that it matters but it would be great know.

Hi and welcome! You home sounds wonderful for very loved pets. Thanks for rescuing this guy. The band info is as follows.
ABR is the breeder-either the name of the aviary letters or breeders initials.
87 is your birds hatchdate. He is 23 yrs old.
301 is the number given the bird in that clutch. They have probably bred a large number of birds.
He sounds like he is coming along fine. With your experience and love I'm sure you will have a strong bond.

I think this must be the oldest (and wisest :)) ekkie on this forum. certainly the oldest I have heard of, even though they are supposed to average about 30-35. I remember a thread last week on the lifespan of the eclectus http://www.parrotforums.com/eclectus/4796-dumb-question-about-lifespan-ekkys.html

thanks everyone. i was told he was over 20 yrs. i saw the 7 and i had assumed it was the date in which he was hatched. so wow i guess he is 23 yrs old. i am going to keep my fingers crossed that he will be one of those that will make it to 60. i have only had him for 2 days and i am already in love. i sit with him for hours just listening to him and repeating him. he has already started to pick up many new words and i just love to watch and listen to him. i am so in love with this little guy. if he died tommorrow i would be very very sad but i would also be much more inriched just by having been graced to have such a beautiful and amazing bird. i hope and pray i have many more years to some with this baby. i dont know how his diet was before but i am working on getting him really good foods and fresh friuts and vegetables. i cant tell you how much i already love him.
and yes i def have a menajerie in my home. i forgot to mention that i am married and have a 2yr old and a 4 yr old one of which has a slight autism. so my life is hectic and kaotic but i wouldnt have it any other way.
i am one of those people who thrive on kaos. which is why i have so many things going on at one time. lol. but i love it. i will try and get some pics up of everyone. but i have a feeling that is going to be one huge post. lol.

I have 2 kids and we have always had heaps of animals in the house... although not as many as you. I think it's a great way for them to grow up and learn compassion and resposability. There are so many great stories of Autistic kids having amazing relationships with animals
Looking forward to seeing the photos

thanks again. sorry if i sounded a little rude in my first post. but sometimes you come across people who dont think you can take care of and love and spend time with as many animals as i have. and i am very touchy when it comes to my babies. especially when the person doesnt know me and has never been to my house or seen any of my animals. i am very sensitive when it comes to my babies.

my kids are really great with all of my animals and they help me and love to help to take care of them. they get mad at me sometimes because i get in a rush while cleaning and forget to take a few minutes letting them help me. lol.
i have read in a few places that eclectus can live up to 50-60 yrs old. but again. i dont know of any and i really nly know one person who even has one besides me. so i have nothing to compare it to. lol. but i can still hope and pray that kaoh will be one of the rare ones. after reading the "dumb question about lifespan" post i am now very sad and very worried that my new baby wont be here as long as i hope. but that doesnt mean i will love him any less or allow that to in anyway keep me from enjoying what time i have with him.

With the amount of care you seem to have for your family and animals, I think you are giving him the best shot of having a really long and happy life.

I'm quite comforted by the fact that the info on the specific dietary needs of the Eclectus is quite new so hopefully our parrots that are on the correct diet will outlive the old stats and we'll start to see this age increase to closer to 50.

Me to. Actually I was talking to my avian vet the other day. And even he agrees that because proper leg banding has only been a fairly recent thing and the true dietary needs are only now starting to be met, it really is hard to say what sort of life span we can expect.

Hi there,
Im the one who posted the dumb question about lifespans of ekkys. I read a lot of conflicting articles and also books and it seems that there was a broad spectrum of their lifespan ranging from roughly 30 - 60 yrs. With lots of love and affection and time spent with him, Im pretty sure he will thrive for many more years to come. 23 is the longest I have heard now and he is a chatty little guy already , then he is most certainly sounding happy. My ekky Jack just turned 1 yesterday , so he is still a spring chicken lol. Your house sounds like a very happy home for all the little babies that you have. :)
