I'm trying to find what the average life span is for an eclectus. What I read is 30-50years but also read that no one really knows past 30 years because they haven't been kept as pets for too long. Any info appreciated.

This question really does have answers that differ wildly. Part of that was the lack of knowledge about their diet, unfortunately I think there have been many eclectus that didn't live to their full potential lifespan due to incorrect diet.:(

In my past research I came up with the same time span of 30 to 50 years but in my past experience with my Cockatiel, who should have lived between 10 and 15 years, he lived to 23 years. And look at humans...some live longer than others based on life style and genetics. :D

I was thinking something along those lines... Making an analogy with humans (or any animal), really even regardless of lifestyle, some (I guess by reason of genetics) are just naturally longer lived than others. Although it does stand to reason that lifestyle and care should help even further.

Most parrots live a longer life in captivity due to no predators and such, plus with proper diet and not having to struggle to find food, they tend to live a lot longer. I've known people with Cockatiels that live past 25 years old. Those time table about the live span is usually done with the wild ones or what they used to be. Things have changed since then as we learn how to feed and care for them properly.

Not to mention the 30-50 year figure is based on the comparatively short window of time during which they've been observed and kept as pets. Eclectus are relatively new on the pet parrot scene. In fact, males and females were thought to be different species due to the difference in coloration up until around the seventies, if I correctly recall.

Anyhow, that, in combination with the lack of understanding about what constitutes a proper ekky diet, contributed to the conservative estimates on their lifespans. But some believe it could potentially be closer to 60-75. I'm shooting for 85, myself! (Of course, I might miss the last few years of that... maybe. Lol)

With animals it seems size matters. Smaller dogs have longer life spans while smaller birds have shorter life span. I am going to guess Ekkies can live as long as Amazons and Greys, 60 years.
