I was out shopping today and when I got home I was doing some dishes. Jasper flew to the kitchen (like he does sometimes to see what I'm doing) and I found this feather on the carpet (guess it fell out on the way over). He has a "baby clip" from the breeder.

I can't tell where it's from (I think near the front of his wings because it's shorter) and if it's broken or not. He seems perfectly fine.

Is it the start of a moult? I thought they lose their primary's first?

Please let me know - thank you. Apologies for my recent spamming of the forum with all my questions, I certainly have appreciated everyone's help so far with him! :green2:

I'm not sure those are wing feathers the top pic is of a feather that's shaft/quill is not large enough to be a primary flight feather. You might want to look Jasper over very carefully as the second pic doesn't really look like it's been shed from a molt/moult...both pics kind of look like almost like they've been clipped... molting feathers should have a slight pointed shaft/quill end...look at the end of that short feather to see if it looks like it might have been chewed by a ekkie beak.....

It is molting/moulting time for many species

Questions are not spamming.....at one time or another, we've all asked your's or similar questions, some have asked pages of questions, so don't worry about it.....it's all part of your learning experience.....

Oh thank goodness! It's only a broken feather ;). From the title I thought Noooo he literally lost a wing (akin to us losing an arm )

OMG i thought the same! I'm glad he is still intact!! The feather seems like nothing to worry about. Could be a short wing feather, not necessarily a flight feather. It doesn't look like it's from a molt, maybe he flapped his wings a weird way and it broke off or if he messed with it too much because it was bothering him or something. As long as he isn't 1. Bleeding and 2. In pain, you should be fine. I find feathers like these on occasion. Just last night my dogs startled one of my parrots and a few of his wing feathers overlapped a weird way and one fell out. It was one of his clipped flight feathers that broke off and it looked similar. I just tucked back in his feathers so he was comfortable and he was fine. It happens. No worries :)

Hey, i'm pretty sure that's a tail feather. Cody breaks them all the time cause he's so clumsy. It will grow back, don't worry about it.

I thought it was a tail feather as well. The yellow tinting on the edge got me a bit confused along with the shape of it.
Thankfully, it wasn't a blood feather.

Katie. You're killing me with this title!

After all of the videos, some of us have grown somewhat fond of your little guy. Let's avoid inducing cardiac events by making me think his wing just up and popped off, okay? Lol!

I can't be sure, but I also believe it is a tail feather. I like Reid's reasoning, as that yellow fringe is most likely to be seen on a tail feather.

It probably broke off during some of Jasper's maneuverings. Baby ekkies are notoriously clumsy and can be rather hard on their baby feathers. I wouldn't worry unless you started seeing a number of similarly broken feathers on his cage floor.

I'm so sorry!! I have no idea why I called it a wing :( Tired? Worried? Eek. Glad the FEATHER is nothing to worry about. He seemed completely fine after I found it and is acting as usual.

Apologies for the scare! Thank you for all of the replies.

Me again!

Jasper lost another feather tonight - identical to the one from the other night. I was changing his cage paper and noticed it on the bottom.

Could this be the start of a molt? His appetite is fine, behaviour normal...he did fly into my trash bin on the weekend but seemed perfectly fine after.

Hmm...

I would think it's from flying to the trashcan.
From the pictures it looks broken rather than molted. Notice the ending/the long-white part.
