Hello fellow Parronts,

Wondering if anyone has any recommendations or tricks on the best way to trim an Eckys nails?

I've not done this before and both my babies are in need of a trim but I'm afraid of hurting them!

Thank you,
Mel

I have a pumice perch I put in his cage. I put it highest level, and Mango uses it as hi roosting perch. It keeps his nails perfectly trimmed, ans his beak as well. Also, a tip on getting them comfy with you touching their feet, i always play with& am teaching Mango to shake hands;).
Now he actually holds his foot up for me now!

I have 2 perches for Jasper that help with his nails, but I also use an emery board as needed. Took him awhile to let me, but now he's gotten better. I have a video that I'll be posting soon. I just say "give me your toe" and he'll hold up his foot for me :)

We trim nails as a 2 person job (husband restrains Kiwi in a towel, I clip the nails). Use the special clippers made for parrot nails and keep styptic on hand in case you cut too short and draw blood.

KB, KF & Mango all offered good ideas, but with the self-manicuring perches, I use those also & find that with my guys, placing these perches in front of food & water dishes pretty much assures them using the perches.....

I just uploaded a file to a free hosting site, that might interest you: My 4shared by we C. - 4shared

You're supposed to be able to access the file & download it without an account, but if anyone has problems reading/getting it, PM me with your E-mail & I'll send it to you.....for those who are new & may not have enough credits to PM yet, message one of the moderators & ask them to send me your E-mail.....

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your ideas.

I have the perches in question but I may need to reposition them for more frequent use and see if I can get away with it so I don't have to clip them myself.

THANK YOU,
Mel

I have four pedicure perches that vary in diameter and one pedicure ladder. One perch next to the water, one next to the pellets, the ladder next to his cooked food/veggies mix, and a third perch where he takes naps. The fourth pedi perch is is his sleeping cage. I try to keep them in "high traffic" areas.

Our bird actually likes his pedi perch, he sits/walks on it frequently, sometimes sleeps on it and deliberately wipes his beak on it when it's messy (which keeps his beak trim). I still have to give him a parrot pedicure about 2X a year. It's not that his nails ever get overgrown, but they develop needle sharp points that make it painful to handle him. I only have to clip about 2mm off to take off the point:) Pedi perches are great but be prepared for the possibility you may still need to clip every so often. And keep in mind, if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, you can always have a vet do it OR some bird stores offer the service too:) You also don't want too many pedi perches in the cage/bird area. They can irritate the pads of their feet if they spend too much time on them, so be sure he has other options too like natural wood and rope perches.

I'm so happy to have found this forum with all you wonderful people that have a wealth of knowledge from around the world.

Thank you all, I've now repositioned the pedi perches and hopefully will see some results if not I'll most likely take them for a trim at my Vet while they go in for their checkups.
