I've seen an older post about giving parrots coconut oil, and I've also been seeing some fid parents add it to the lunch bowl. Just wondering if anyone has experience with this.
How much do you use?
Do you only use it when cooking or do you put it directly on top of their food?
How often is it given?
Is it ok while also providing some seeds and nuts?

I have both coconut oil and MCT oil (an extract of coconut oil) that stays in liquid form.
Which would be better?

I have a jar of solid coconut oil, and I give my birds a tiny bit of it every day. They get really excited when they see me get the jar out and scoop it up! I scoop a tiny bit, maybe around 1/4 teaspoon or less, and hold the spoon to them, and they eat it off the spoon. They both share the one small spoonful.

Breakfast around here is always warmed. I mostly use unrefined cold pressed coconut oil (it has the most nutrients intact) and sometimes I use Red Palm Oil, also very good for them. I put in a pretty good chunk in the pan to heat breakfast.

Thank you all!
I cooked a meal for him yesterday using coconut oil and he was in his bowl gobbling like a turkey as he does when he really likes something haha. I will start to include the coconut oil more, and also pick up some red palm oil as well.
Flboy, I would agree that 'they' got it wrong with saying coconut oil is bad! I use it a lot myself and it has done wonders for my own health.

I just read an article about a woman's husband who had begun to show signs of dementia she started giving him 2 tablespoons a day of coconut oil and he is greatly improved. I would say it is magic stuff. It is mostly all I use for myself and husband. Occasionally olive oil but I never cook that I only use it to make my homemade salad dressing.:D

Hi guys I have a Sun Conure and I've read about benefits of coconut oil..

Coconut oil, which is a good source of beta carotene which, when consumed,
is then converted into vitamin A and also has Lauric acid, that has antiviral, antibac, and antimicrobial properties accordingly..

Maybe aside from giving a drop or two daily, it can also be used to make their feathers shine and strong? Please advise experts

(Dearest mods, I hope this isn't against rule #13 :white1: i just hope to point out a product if it's okay for my little Vivi)
I plan on getting the coconut oil like this, and also coconut sesame seeds too for occassional feeds because it looks so for the birds :whiteblue::blue2::blue1::red1: :32:

Please advise guys, thanks in advance :(

No, you haven't broken the rules. Now, if these were your products and you were advertising with intent to sell, that would be a different story. Or if those were CL links. Neither of which is the case in this instance, so no worries.

I also use coconut oil for Chili~ I add a little bit to her warm chop mix every night, but I also rub it on her feet as a lotion.....you don't want to get it ON their feathers though.

I also use it as a make-up remover and skin lotion for myself, but it has a million other uses for it too....

I add a little coconut oil to a lot of birdie meals. Poppy loves to have it rubbed on her feet.

Has anybody used coconut oil for oil pulling? Really a great idea for oral health, it's also a good addition to hair mask recipes :) Gonna start using it for the birds now too!

I'm curious about where you store your coconut oil. I buy an organic oil that says no refriigeration but wondered how long it can be kept. I used to eat it all the time but I noticed the last few jars I purchased no longer have the lovely hint of coconut so my interest was lost. But now after reading your thoughts and rave reviews, I thought to start using it again... but; though my jar is stamped good until April 17, 2016, I have not used it in months while it's been open. Would you throw out and start over? I don't want to get Oliver sick or myself...

Though coconut oil has good shelf life, it still does spoil. Especially if contaminants (like a used spoon dipped into the main container) get into the product. You can tell if its okay, if it still smells/tastes the same. If you're really unsure, you could always get anew. Peace of mind :)
