Lucky, a 10 year old Eclectus
I brought Lucky home yesterday and so far, everything is going well as can be expected. He doesnā€™t bite, at least not yet, even when I placed my hand in his carrier when I met him and his former owner. He just kind of grabbed on and pushed my hand away, and then nudged it further back with his beak.

To catch everyone up, Lucky is a 10 year old Vosmaeri Eclectus that I purchased from his owner in Long Island, NY. I am now his third owner, and his last owner sold him because she has 40 birds and doesn't have enough time for them.

The former owner stated that he is a great bird, loves to come out and play, lets her touch his back etc. He tolerates me next to his cage and at the moment Iā€™m trying to give him his space but it sure is hard, heā€™s so cute! Every so often Iā€™ll place my hand in the cage and give him some scratches, which he tolerates with a semi open beak. I can tell heā€™s nervous about it, but not enough to get beaky. He wonā€™t step up and will get beaky if I insist, which is fine considering its his 1st morning in his new home. I just back off; I have plenty of patience.

He came right out of his carrier when he got home and started eating a few hours after that. He seems to like carrot, squash and some beans I cooked but hasnā€™t touched his pellets, which is fine. I figure Iā€™ll worry about WHAT heā€™s eating later, as long as he eating now.

He hasnā€™t really touched any of the toys in his cage, but moves around most of the cage without any problems. I can see heā€™s interested in some of them, but just not ready yet. I asked his former owner to bring a toy with her that he likes, and she brought a little puzzle box that I hung in the cage. He definitely was happy to see it, and took one of the pieces from me before dropping it on the cage floor.

My computer desk is on the other side of the room, and I sit with my back towards his cage. Heā€™s started making vocalizations when Iā€™m playing games, anything that makes noise. He meows, says ā€œHelloā€ and whistles and I call back. The vocalization is pretty distorted, but his owner said he didnā€™t talk and Iā€™m excited that I may be able to work on his clarity.

You can see from the photos he has a bald spot on his head. His former owner said it was from a bad batch of seed that contained some moss that caused him to lose feathers. She said that it was several months ago and that they are starting to fill in. Iā€™ll verify this with the vet check on Monday or Tuesday.

Iā€™ll keep ā€˜yall posted!

What a beautiful boy he is. I'm so happy that you have finally got him home with you.

I'm sure that with all the love and patience you seem to have you'll have him stepping up and talking more and more in no time at all. He's probably feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment with all the lovely new things in his cage but again I'm sure that he'll soon settle down. I'm also glad for Lucky to have found his forever home.

How about telling me his hatchday so that we can add him to the hatchday thread. :D If your not sure of the exact date don't worry you could always use the date you brought him home.

Wow, he is gorgeous!!! I love him! Great job in taking him in, poor thing he's been to too many houses now.

One thing i've learned about eckies is that they arent the touchy type...
My boy sits on my lap when im on the computer and he loves it, i'll give him a kiss and hug sometime and he even falls asleep on me:D . Dont push him, these birds are very observant and will check things out before attempting to go near it or play with it. One other thing you can place in his cage is cuttle bone, my boy simply loves destoying it and its cheap!!!

Keep us updated please!
