Jasper (6yr old Solomon Island Eclectus Parrot)
Tonight has been an absolute nightmare.

Everything was fine, Jasper was sitting on the door of his cage playing with toys I put out having a great time. One of his favourite toys is a little bell I put on a pear link. He rings it and bashes it around and has lots of fun.

He also likes to undo pear links, particularly the one with the bell on it, and dismantle the toy. He had just undid the link when I was walking by with my dinner so I quickly twisted it back on. I could see he was already starting to undo it when I sat down at my desk to eat.

I put on my show and started to eat. I could hear him playing with the bell like always (he's literally five feet from me) and then all of a sudden I heard frantic wing flapping. I looked over and could see he was in trouble. I ran over and he started screaming. It looked like the pear link was stuck in his beak but I couldn't see well.

He climbed up underneath the door that folds out (where the pear link was attached) and I supported his body with my hands while I tried to see what was wrong. It was then I could see the pear link was THROUGH him somehow.

He flipped up on top of the door and at that moment it looked like the link was in his neck, I really didn't know. He was so frantic. The link was still attached to the cage but I managed to get it unhooked somehow. I don't know how. I thought he was going to die.

When I got it disconnected I then got a good look at what was wrong. Somehow the link had pierced him up under his lower beak (the soft part) and up through his mouth. The bell was also still on the link. He was freaking out like crazy.

I grabbed him around his back and held him up against my chest. With my other hand I grabbed him around his neck (obviously not in the right spot because his head was still going nuts, I've never grabbed him around the neck EVER). I opened his beak slightly to see and he was biting down on my finger. I tried to push the link out but it was stuck.

I grabbed my phone and called the 24 hour vet that I had put in there the day I got him for emergencies. They're 1/2 hour away. The lady said no one there was able to see him, they left at 5. It's a 24 hour vet!! She starts giving me numbers. I'm trying to write them with my opposite hand and control Jasper. He ran off under his cage and I had to go get him. It was horrible.

I brought him to my bedroom and put him on my bed with a blanket as a barrier around him. I did not see any blood so I knew at that point I still had time to get him help. I called my dad to tell him the situation and was trying to get dressed. Jasper had climbed up onto my hand so I was trying to do all of his with one hand.

Suddenly he ran up my shoulder and I heard the bell hit the ground. I looked down expecting to see the bell but the link still in his mouth. By some miracle BOTH the pear link and bell were on the floor. He shook it out somehow, I have no idea how he did it.

Immediately he calmed down. I looked under his beak for signs of blood and tried to get him to open his beak. I didn't see anything underneath but it's hard to tell where he was pierced.

He had some blood in his mouth but after getting a really good look in the bathroom where it's bright I could see the bleeding was from the puncture, but there wasn't anymore blood coming out.

He calmed right down and we cuddled for an hour. He looked exhausted and kept closing his eyes. He took a treat from me and ate it slowly and beak scraped.

He has since eaten dinner, his bedtime snack, had water, beak scraping (happy) and appears to be completely normal.

I'm a wreck. I feel awful and sick. I have no idea how this happened. I have taken pliers and tightened every pear link in his cage as tight as they will go. I suspect it was a combination of bad timing, Jasper playing and lunging at the bell and somehow being at the wrong angle at the worst time.

I really feel like I could have lost him tonight if it had somehow pierced his throat. I am eternally grateful he's still alive but I'm sitting here in tears thinking about everything.

How terribly frightening for you and Jasper:( I'm glad he was not injured! Sometimes, no matter how diligent you are with safety, accidents do happen. This sounds like a freak occurrence and will probably never happen again!

Wow! That must've been extremely scary for you both. I'm glad he managed to get the link out. Just make sure to watch that area of soft tissue under the lower beak very carefully for any signs of infection.

What a terrifying story! I'm glad that Jasper seems okay after his ordeal. I agree with Stephen, infection could be a possibility and bears watching.

I'm glad that jasper is ok- sounds like a horrifying experience!!

I don't mean to sound harsh about this, but if he can un-do the pear links, I think it would be in Jasper's best interest that you discontinue using them and opt for more heavier duty locking links or simply tightly cinched zip ties.

Thank you guys, appreciate your comments. It was absolutely horrifying seeing him like that and not having any help nearby. The poor guy was very quiet this morning when I was getting ready for work. I checked on him in the middle of the night and he was still sleeping so that was good.

He is still on medication for his yeast infection for another 8 days so when I was giving it to him this morning I could see the puncture wound quite clearly. I just feel awful. He must be in pain.

Yes, I agree about the links. I was looking online to see what other types of links are available, but don't see a lot of options: Hardware - Toy Making Supplies - Products

In the meantime I took pliers and tightened all of the links in his cage as much as I could. They either come loose because he opens them or because of playing with the toys I guess they wiggle open (although I think it's more #1).

Last night was a horrible freak accident like someone mentioned. He gets really into playing and lunges, etc. The link was just moving at the right time and he was stretching upwards at the wrong time I guess :( It still doesn't make sense how it could have happened.

You could use zip ties which you would have to cut to move them.

I've actually heard of a few of these freak accidents and do agree that in the case the bird is known to play hard and get the links undone their use should probably be discontinued.

Katie if you think he's in pain and there's a puncture wound, he needs to go to the vet -ASAP!

And im sorry but I just don't think that tightening them with pliers will solve the solution- temporarily or permanently... Go to the hardware store and buy some zip ties (they're super cheap!) and then throw away every single pear link.

My Ripley is infamous for opening quick links! He ONCE got his beak caught, and that was all it took for me to take every precaution for that to NEVER happen again. But I'm talking SS Quick Links, not those flimsy pear shaped ones (and yes, they ARE flimsy and DANGEROUS).

I now have to resort to using either enormous SS chains that even Ripley's beak can't budge, BIG SS quick links that are tightened with 2 (!!) pliers, and the use of natural sisal rope or polyrope to fasten toys. Unfortunately he's learned to snap through the zip ties. They worked for a little while though. If Jasper leaves them alone, then they're a GREAT solution.

In the meantime, get rid of any and all pear shaped links.

I know you can find something like this in a Canadian hardware store:
SAX59045 Stainless Steel 2 7/16" Wide Jaw Quick Link - STAINLESS STEEL:31:

Just make sure you use 2 pairs of pliers when you fasten them, especially since Jasper has figured out that they can open.

These are the ones I use on everything currently: http://parrotdiseperch.com/east/products/toy-making-supplies/hardware/pear-link-nickel-plate-medium

(Unless of course the toy came with a different one. The ones in the picture you posted are on some of his toys/boings but not very many)

Jasper loves to try and bite zip ties but hasn't bitten through any yet. I'm worried about using them on toys though in case he got a toe caught, even if it was zipped up as far as you could put it.

I did a search on Canadian Tire's website and see these ones: http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/search-results.html?searchByTerm=true&q=quick+link

Not sure if any are stainless steel though...I'll read through the descriptions.

Sorry, but those pear shaped links are pieces of garbage. No nicer way of saying it. Why use Nickel plated? Just because they come with a toy, does NOT mean they're ok to use.

Exactly!!

Not all bird toys and accessories are safe for every specie- those pear links are just inappropriate to use with jasper because of his size, beak strength, and intelligence --and if it happened once, it'll happen again... So why risk it??

I use zip ties with all of my birds and never have had any issue- and honestly, they're more safer than those flimsy pear links! And all you need to do is cinche them as tight as possible, trim off the excess and as long as it's tight around whatever it's holding there really shouldn't be an issue.

Learned a lot from this thread. If Kyo figures out how to undo hers I'll definitely be using only sisal rope!
