I was checking out my bird's leg band this morning and I noticed it said FX 1797. Does that mean she was hatched 1-7-97? Just wondering.

It's possible. However most breeders use a state and just a year. Example: MD 97 Maryland hatch yr 1997. The FX may be the name of the aviary or the breeders name abbreviation. 1797 could also just be a number they have given that particular baby. There are several areas you can go and look for assistance.
I would google parrot leg bands or try Legbands Yahoo group. I cannot remember the link but I am sure someone will along to help.

LegBandNumbers : Leg Band Numbers

Although my bird's band wasn't in the registry, I posted a message to the group and within a day someone had recognized the initials on my band. Turns out she was a hobby breeder, so used her own name initials on it.

Good luck.

Thank you everyone, I applied to the Yahoo group so hopefully someone will know. If she was born in 97 that would make her 13 and the man I bought her from told me she was young, but wasn't sure exactly how old. I hope she is younger than 13 because I want as much time with her as I can get.

That is exactly why I looked for Rosie's breeder. She turned out to be 9, hopefully ours live long healthy lives!

Hello:

I know this is an o-l-d threat, Pawsfoot, but did you ever find any information on your bird's breeder? Is FX a breeder's code & was yours the 17th bird hatched in 1997?

I ask because we just got an amazon whose leg ban is FX, too, although he is FX3301

This is info. that I found:
Cage Bird Bands

Cage birds often wear bands. If these bands are solid, seamless bands they indicate that the bird is captive bred. Parrots that go through US quarantine wear a metal importation band made of heavy wire. Each type of cage bird(parakeet, cockatiel, finch, etc) has at least one group that issues bands to members for their use. Some regional bird clubs also issue bands to their members. These bands are metal with either the organization or breeders initials, a two-digit year, and a number. Check with local bird breeders or pet shops for information on cage bird bands. The Bird Banding Laboratory does not take reports of these bands.

This is a link to where I found the info:

The band doesn't mean anything it is just a number that the breeder gives the bird to identify it from the other birds. And because in order to sell birds over the state line the bird has to be banded. :greenyellow:

The number and/or letters on the band DOES mean something, it is not just a random number. It has the state that the bird is from on it & usually year that the bird was hatched in & sometimes the breeder's initials or the initials of the Aviary that the bird is from.
