Are pinecones safe play/chew toys?

Jess is our Male Indian Ring Neck and Ruby is our Female Eclectus
uploadfromtaptalk1440721060361.jpg Ruby loves to pull apart these pinecones I get from my uncles place. I just wonder if they safe for her to chew on. They do have sharp little bits on them but she doesn't seem to mind. Can anyone please tell me if they are safe toys for my birds.

Yes, but it's recommended to sterilize them, which is usually done by baking them at 220*F for 20 minutes, IIRC.

Thanks Tomang. now I just need to convert the temp. haha I live in Australia and we use Celsius. Thanks heaps for the tip.

Jasper LOVES pinecones. I make him surprise bags to rip apart and always put a huge one in there. I've only ever bought them from the petstore though, but if I could find some outside to sterilize I'd try that!
