Solomon island female eclectus
Hello everyone,

Can you please share what does your eclectus like when it comes to fresh fruits and veggies.. I give Rani(female eclectus) bean mix (kidney beans, chick peas, black eyed peas, lentils soaked overnight and boiled) she fiddles around the beans and throws them on the floor and eats a bit of it..... I have also tried corn, peas, carrots and she will only eat the corn and throw the rest down..... She seems to like brown rice a bit. As far as fruits go she will not touch apples. She seems to like grapes a lot and mangoes.

She loves her pellets and millets. As far as treats go she don't want anything. If i bring her to other room she will walk back to the cage. What should i try for treats?

What does your eclectus eat?

Too many questions...sorry guys. Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you
chrisi

Sprouts! She adores sprouts! And they are so good for them. Do you know how to make sprouts? I bought a couple mason jars and 2 lids that fit on a sprout jar. I soak them overnight, drain, rinse, then cover with a towel for another day or 2 until they have sprouted(depends on the seed/bean) and then store in the fridge.

They are cheap and pretty easy to do and my birds LOVE them.

Rosie also eats rice, pasta, sweet potato, carrots, kale, bell peppers of all kinds, etc. She isn't a big eater though, they just don't stomach a lot at a time.

I will try the sprouts. Do you just soak and drain and let them sprout? My breader said they like semi cooked foods... So been boiling the sprouts few minutes.

May be she does not like the semi cooked taste. I will try just the sprouts next time

She very likely might not like it cooked. Certain foods should be cooked, but certain others are better raw.

There is an instructional on how to sprout around here somewhere... try this http://www.parrotforums.com/39590-post5.html
Currently I am sprouting black eyed peas, chickpeas, barley, alfalfa, quinoa, millet, lintels, and a spicy sprout mix I got from the local natural food store.

Best way to figure out what your ekkie likes is to grab $10-20, go down to the F&V market and go nuts lol. Here is a list of foods that my ekkie will eat, depending on the day. Might give you some ideas :):

Pineapple
Blueberries
Strawberries
Corn
Green peas
Green beans
Carrot
Sweet potato (Cooked, mashed and mixed with other veggies)
Brown rice (Cooked ad mixed with veggies)
Red pepper
Cucumber
Broccoli
Pair
Peach
Mango
Orange
Celery
Kiwi fruit
Banana
And more...

Also don’t forget nuts:
Almonds, Pine nuts and Cashews are my birds favourites

I find he will eat more foods if I stagger them through the week, otherwise he gets board with them. Sometimes he just decides that he doesn't like something anymore. Then a week later he will do anything to get it lol, fussy bird.

My vet told me not to give Scarlett any strawberries cause they often harbour funguses and soil bugs.

I heard this too. If you are going to feed them, remove the leaves, inspect them thoroughly, wash them well and make sure you buy a good brand. I used to feed tomatoes as well, but found out they are dangerous for birds. Many foods can harbour fungus, some worse than others.

Buy good quality human grade foods, try and find foods that have had minimal to no pesticides, inspect well, wash and you should be fine ;). Still as many people on this forum will tell you, "if in doubt, leave it out" :)

Good Morning Rani,

Abby is not real picky she eats just about everything that the others have listed and she loves jalapenos.

I have also found that I need to rotate her food. She will eat just about anything...

I have a question for you electus owners. I am experienced with parrots and have fostered them but now it is time for one of my own. I have been offered a 3 yr old male sl electus who is very sweet and loves everyone. The owner does not have time for the bird anymore because he is getting married and moving to a non pet friendly condo, he is wanting $700 for the bird. Is it better to get a baby or is a 3 yr old an okay thing to do and is $700 a fair price. I wanted something low dander and love the personality of the electus. Please help, thanks!

Eclectus - Shadow /
Sulfur Crested - Chicka
Shadow is a really fussy eater but she also loves sprouts (esp mung beans), passionfruit, oranges, red peppers & beans, all the rest will depend on the day. I just offer her a mixture and try to include various colours. The only things I cook are the root veges like sweet potato. She also likes her food cut into small bits.

I make birdie bread too which she loves - wholemeal flour, oats, whole raw eggs (shell and all) and what ever's in the fridge/cupboard a bird can eat. I ad-lib the quantities, if it's too dry I add fruit juice, too wet I add oats

I think and older parrot can be just as rewarding as a baby, as for the price it would depend on where you live & how much they sell for as a comparison. Also look at what that includes eg toys, cage play stand etc. Keep us posted

Nothing is included, they are offering cage and toys but then the price is $850. I already have a large cage for the the bird. I live in Melbourne, fl and babies go for about $450 to $600. The eclectus seems to be a very loving bird and talks and seems to make a good companion as I am going thru the empty sydrome and work from home. Does this seem like a good choice?

Hello,

$700 for male SI does sound fair to me. I just got a 10 week old SI female baby for $1300. But she is a pure breed. I am in atlanta, GA. I used to have a sun conure before who was totally like a 2yr old 24/7 and we all loved having him around. He flew away and we all were totally devastated and i decided to get another bird for the family. I will tell you one thing that my female is super super super quite. She does not bite anyone. She prefers to be in or around the cage most of the time. From the one month that i have had her i feel that she is not as playful as my conure. This does not stop me from loving her but i want to be honest with you on what difference we see in her vs our conure. I work from home as well and we have no kids. With the sun conure we had company no matter what we are doing. He would wake up with us and sleep with us. If we had guest and we were all staying up till 1-2am he would be up as well. With the female SI i see that she is settled in her cage by 8pm. I have heard that the males are more playful vs the females.

hope this helps.

Scarlett will usually eat one kiwifruit, one passionfruit, half a small apple, the insides of a couple of snowpeas, a couple of cherry tomatoes, and 6 or 7 sunflower seeds, a day. However she leaves most of it as mush and probably only actually eats a third of it.

Sounds like your eclectus isn't eating very much, have you tried offering a large variety of foods? She might eat more if the food is more fun to eat (fruit left whole no cuts) or is more yummy (try passionfruit, every eclectus goes nuts for it).

Shadow loves her passionfruit. She has a bowl with everything cut up into small pieces and a skewer with big chunks or whole fruit. Some days she eats heaps others not so much. If you're concerned she's not getting enough weigh him before breakfast each morning and make sure it's stable or depending on age increasing.

My female eclectus(Rani) seems to eat a lot but she drops half of what she picks up. What i have seen with her is she would eat about 4 times a day. I give her mix of 2-3 fruits in morning, sprouts in afternoon and her pellets at night. I feel that she loves the pellets and i have seen that she will spend the most time eating pellets. Other food she picks up and drop and keeps mushing it.

One month later we have a bit progress:) When i wake up and open her cage now she will come out on her own. Also i notice that she will be quite all day but between 1-3 if i close all the blinds she will go sit on the perch where she sleeps and she will make various sounds.

I have not found Rani's favorite food yet but still trying different things with her. She seems to love corn so far.

Does your eclectus prefer being in the cage or outside the cage.. If i take rani in the kitchen and place her on the dining table she will try to jump and walk to the cage. I have taken her to different parts of the house and she tries to walk to the cage. I feel she does not like to spend any time outside of the cage.

My conure would not go inside the cage. Everyday it was a trip for me to lock him down. This one is opposite LOL....Sorry if i am freaking out and not giving her time LOL.. I just feel sad when she walks away to the cage.
Am i not doing something she needs to get comfortable with me?

my ekkie loves to play with passionfruit and corn ... its a "pick, chew and throw" game usually end up with a big mess in his cage and surrounding area.

his favourit food are; banana, papaya, mung bean sprout, oatmeal and muesli.

not sure how old is he because this is wild caught bird but looking at his beak it should be less than a year old.
