I gave Jack and Luna a shower yesterday and laughed with my husband about how it seemed to have worn Luna out because she slept right through dinner. I went to feed them before work this morning and she was still sleeping. I panic a little, but I'm a natural worrier and I told myself it was still early. I filled their bowls with fresh food and some Harrisons since she missed last night's feeding.

My husband texts me while I'm at work that she's really sleepy. Alarm bells are going off in my head. But I'm working a 12 hour shift and have to wait.

He calls me on my way home and tells me she was on the bottom of the cage sleeping. I'm driving home and I'm just done for.

I get home and he has the thermostat up to 73 degrees and he's holding luna and trying to feed her seeds, fruit, chicken nuggets, all of her favorites. She just keeps falling asleep.

I weighed her and she's lost at least 20 grams. Her keel bone is pronounced.

I call EVERY vet I can and no one has an avian vet on emergency tonight. Even UPENN.

I'm taking her first thing tomorrow to her vet, but you guys....this is polyoma isn't it? She's going to die in a couple of days. No matter what I do. I just can't. I feel like I killed her. She's only 8 months old.

I'm so sorry to hear this! Without testing for specific diseases, no one can say for sure Polyoma, so try to get it out of your head for the time being. There can be many reasons for her symptoms, some that are not contagious or life threatening. Crossing my fingers in hopes you can get to a competent avian vet asap.

Ugh, it's too late for NY. I have her set up in a hospital cage in my temp controlled bathroom set at 80. I got her to drink some Pedialyte on her own (such a relief) and I have it available for her all night. She's perching ok on a rope perch in the bottom of the cage. I'm trying to let her rest now, it's just hard not to keep checking on her. 8am can't come soon enough. I don't know how much sleep I'm going to get.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
I'm really sorry Luna is sick and showing signs of distress. Please keep her warm, and take care of yourself in preparation for the long ride. Her symptoms can mean a lot of possibilities, many treatable.

A competent vet clinic will try to stabilize her and work up a diagnosis.

Please let us know how Luna is doing when able.

Liz,

My heart goes out to you, this must be a scary time, hopefully this is a treatable issue and unrelated to polyoma.

Best wishes,

Cameron

I just got home from the vet. I left her there so they can start blood work, antibiotics and antifungals. I'm glad she's there because I know how quickly things can go downhill.

She's pretty dehydrated and lost another 10 grams. The vet is going to place an osteo-cath and update me whenever she knows something new. Still very tired when I left her, which made everyone think she is very sweet (which she is, but she definitely has an adventurous side).

Oh my gosh I am so sorry little Luna is not doing well. I really really hope it is not Polyomavirus. There are lots of reasons she could be feeling this way and I am sending all my positive thoughts your way.

Great that she was put into a vet's care as quickly as possible. Hopefully it'll be only good news from here on out.
