It took me over two months to name a few of my dogs. I initially liked the name Scooter for the baby Ekkie but now I don't like it as much. His personality is developing now and I know choosing a name is important.

The name Jasper is very popular for boy Ekkies, but I have always liked it. We live close to Jasper, GA as well.

How do I know when I've got the right name? Most of my birds have been rescues so I haven't had the opportunity to name them myself. Why is this SO HARD??

With a few birds I've had including Raven and Griffin, I had the names before I even had the bird. Then I wanted a budgie named Pooh, but people all but begged me not to lol. I finally settled on Mink, but it took a while before it popped into my head. I think when you think of the right one, it clicks and you know it's the right one.

Just know that if you name a male Ekkie Jasper, that will make 3 on the forum!

There's tons of Jaspers on YouTube as well! Obviously it's a suitable name for our green babies.

Do you think it will negatively affect him if it takes me time to name him?

So apparently Jasper means 'precious stone usually red in colour". Kind of ironic it's so popular for the boys!
You could spell it the German way...which is 'Jaspis' Apparently.

If you use a whistle/tone as his sound now and while you introduce his name, I don't think it'll make much difference.

(We took our time naming human kid the second, and he seems fine ;) )

Thank you, that's a good suggestion. It took me three months to name Wawa my chihuahua. Her name has morphed over the years to Waz, Wazzle, and Wazzle butt.

Jasper (6yr old Solomon Island Eclectus Parrot)
I had no idea the name Jasper was popular for Ekkies haha. I had just always had that name in the back of my mind when trying to decide what to call him. I read through hundreds and hundreds of names but I kept going back to that one. Sounded more sophisticated to me I guess :D

Dexter, SI Eclectus
For all of our pets, we have come up with a short list of 3 to 5 possible names, then wait for the pet to show us which is the right one. For Dexter we had: Dexter (obviously), Oliver, Iago, Papaya (nickname Pappy), Alton and Figaro. Within one day we all agreed he is a Dexter.

I love the name Jasper. When we got our female Ekkie I told Husband he had the honor of naming her. In seconds he said "Venus". Later we learned that is a popular name, but we have many nicknames for her like red bird, angry bird, Veenie weenie, Veenie weenie Boe beenie, veenie beenie, it goes on and on, lol.

Dont know why but all of my pets names were picked out prior to getting them, with the exception of our current rescue dog, Cosette. She was named this at the rescue and since hubby and I couldnt agree on new name, we kept what they gave her and continue to chuckle about how our loveable "thunder paws" is soooooo not a Cosette (rough translation, petite little thing). Our 70lb tomboy goes by a lot of nicknames including Hoyden, Elvis, TP, but most of the time we call her Big Girl. She really doesnt seem to care as long as we smile at her, give her a pat and endless ear scritches.

Liesl was named before I ever put a deposit on her, the next bird will be either Bunchbean (family significance) or Kiwi. I know--Kiwi is not original, but its a nod to my husband who is a Kiwi. Doesnt really matter what others think, just what makes us smile.

My eccy was originally named Princess when I picked her up. I did NOT like the name. It took me a few months but i chose something different and called her Tequila :)

Even though Aria was a rescue, she didn't have a name when I got her. I hardly ever actually call her by her name, she is my "pretty chicken".

Parker - male Eclectus

Aphrodite - red throated conure (RIP)
I feel ya. I'm awful with naming animals! When I was a kid everything was Greek god names. My last bird was Aphrodite. It won't hurt him to take your time. Remember, they don't know what names are, they don't have that construct. It's all just sounds from this strange species. A name is merely a sound they associate with "pay attention, I'm talking to you". It's a training thing.

Parker has a number of nicknames to the point he only hears his name half the time:

Parky
Parker/parkydooodle(s)
Little dinosaur
Bub
Bud/buddy
Parkydoo
Little Green monster

He doing just wonderfully. He is just now starting to develop a personality but showing no interest in completely weaning. He cries for hand feedings still twice a day, which I'm totally fine with because it's a good way to bond for us and I love feeling truly like mommy for now. My daughter is almost 9 so she's definitely miss independent.

He bit me for the first time this morning, as he has discovered he has a beak within the last few days. I was NOT prepared for it at all because it came from out of nowhere. I am using Mark's bite training method to work with his bite pressure, as I love birds who use their beaks, just not to maul my hands
