Queen Chicken The Pretty

I let the pretty chicken hang out on the kitchen table this morning while we worked on target training. Then she decided she didn't want to get off the table, so started an epic battle for her to defend her new kingdom.

She has been absolutely adorable this morning. She decided to actually talk to me while target training. I just use my finger as the target, and she reached up, touched my finger, then said "good girl" before I even had a chance to. I have been thinking about another "big bird" but I am not sure if I even want one. I thought about getting a male Ekkie, because I do love the Ekkies, but then I think I may be better off with just the pretty chicken. She is my girl, and I don't want to jeopardize that by changing the flock dynamics.

As another side note, I think this is going to end up being the pretty chicken's ongoing thread. I do like the idea that so many of you have already implemented, so I will follow suit.

Absolutely adorable

That is so precious... she "defends herself" sooooo gently and playfully. I love that.
The Rickeybird has no sense of humor about marauding hands, and would bite to kill. *sigh*

By the way, in the "Animal Alphabet" game here... I submitted PRETTY CHICKEN when the P came around for me!

With owning a male and female eclectus, I would have to say that although I am very happy and I think Pebbles and Gizmo (my female and male) have a great dynamic together and they each enrich each other's lives and mine, I really did Make the decision completely blind, and from some stories I have heard, I got very lucky.

In having Gizmo and Pebbles I have realised just how different an eclectus personality can be, as Gizmo and Pebbles are completely different personality types, so I do feel rather lucky that even though they may have the occasional dispute, they really do enjoy each other's company. As I understand it my two don't even seem to have the common relationship (Gizmo is younger and the male, yet at the moment, he is the dominant one).

Just wanted to mention it as I think I was very silly when I added Pebbles to the flock without doing any research (although I couldn't see Pebbles go to the place she would have gone had I not bought her, so I still think I made the right decision, it just wasn't a well thought out decision).

See, I would be worried that they wouldn't get along, and that it would cause issues between me and the birds when jealousy plays a factor. I'm really glad it worked out for you, especially for Pebble's sake. I would definitely take the chance if it meant saving another bird, but I don't know if I want to risk it just to get another one.

It has worked out beautifully for me, as well. Jolly and Maya are not yet bonded to each other or anything, but neither are they aggressive toward each other. I am their favorite, so each is pretty much focused on me.

To avoid any of the jealousy issues you've mentioned, I developed a turn-based system wherein each has come to understand that if I am interacting with one, the other will definitely be next. This was practiced consistently until it became a simple fact of life for them. So at this point, there are no jealousy issues whatsoever.

Of course, every bird's personality is different. So there are no guarantees. But I wanted you to know that it is possible. Oh, and also keep in mind that before Jolly I had Bixby, who also managed a non-antagonistic relationship with Maya... also based on the turn system. different dynamic and transition periods, but ultimately positive results. I think it all comes down to consistency and setting boundaries.

Bixby and Maya (and Me!) Maya was definitely crushing big time on Sir Bixby! Lol!

The poor chicken is spending her first night in a "sleep cage". It's just her travel cage stripped down to just a couple perches and her water dish. My wife has to work nights tomorrow, so she is staying up late tonight and I want to make sure the chicken gets enough sleep. I just feel bad putting her in another room while we're still awake, but I know it's better for her.

Gail, if you were to ask his rival, I bet rude rooster is one of the nicest things he could be called lol. Getting her up this morning was a chore. There is a good reason I don't mess with her before breakfast, it involves her beak and my fingers. I had to make sure she saw me put breakfast in her regular house before I could pick her up out of her night night cage.
