Gizmo - Male Eclectus Parrot

Pebbles - Female Eclectus Parrot
Gizmo and Pebbles favourite treat by far is almonds. I broke out the almonds when I first started harness training, and although they loved them, Gizmo especially was certain that there was an endless supply, so 80% would end up on the ground.

In an effort to reduce cost and potential over feeding, I got the cutting board out today and cut a heap of almonds in half. Tonight I did a quick training session and giving them both half an almond each, they were both like "hey....what's going on!!". I was amused to see them carefully holding the half in there foot, and carefully removing small bits and turning it in there beaks, wasting very little.

You can especially see the focus in Pebbles eyes, and the fact that I could get such a close photo of Gizmo without him wanting to jump on the phone (a habit he has), shows how important almonds are to him:D.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Almonds are probably a universal treat craved by parrots! Not good in large quantities for most parrots, particularly Ekkies. I seriously ration them to all of my birds, and you are on the right track by cutting them into small pieces!!

Awesome pics of Gizmo and Pebbles!!

First, let me just say... THOSE PICS!!!!! Wow! Beautiful shots of your ekkies, Cameron!

As for the almonds, my birds would be heated if they could read! Hahaha! I have a small wire cutter type tool that I use specifically for cutting their nuts into quarters or smaller. For almonds, definitely quarters. Both because they eat it faster while training, and to keep down the fat content. (Of course, there are exceptions when they pull off something... exceptional.)

Wow, can't get over those pics! Nice!

Good to hear Pebbles and Gizmo are not the only ones with an addiction:D.

Stephen,

I am curious about this wire cutting tool, is it like a cheese cutter?

Thanks for the kind words about the images, I tend to be a bit of a self critic when it comes to photo's ("that's not in focus", etc). Here is a close up one of Pebbles I took due to poor lightly and camera shake it's not crisp, but it's a good demonstration of how they don't care about the camera being there.

It's funny as I can pretty much touch them with the camera now, as long as they have a treat. I think it is because of the training I have done with trying to touch them and lift a wing etc. The problem I have is lighting (as I am mostly playing around at night time), but if there is no treat, it's a different story, Gizmo just wants to jump on the camera, and if I get too close to Pebbles she thinks it might make a good chew toy:D

The pretty chicken always wants to eat the camera too. That's why any series of pictures I take of her are just her getting progressively closer to the camera until I get a picture of her beak on the camera.

She loves almonds as well, although I am not sure I could say she is addicted to them, she is addicted to food in general. She just loves to eat, and she will eat just about anything she is given. If it is handed to her, as opposed to being in her bowls, then it has "treat" status. It can be rather convenient that way. Although I think her favorite are pepitas.

Yeah Cameron, seeing your pics tells me I need to dust off the real camera instead of using the cell camera all the time. Nice!

As for the tool, I think we're on different pages. But looking back over my original post, I realize the fault is mine. Lol! It's not a tool that utilizes a wire as its blade, but rather a multi-purpose tool with the primary purpose of cutting wire with its blade. But when flipped around, there is a pliers-like implement with sharp, serrated edges that cuts through nuts with ease.
