So I think we hit a pretty big step in reducing Tiki's biting last night. I had him out and was bringing him back to his house. Well, he may not have agreed that it was time to go home, because he started shuffling further up my arm.

The last time he did that, he started to lose balance once he was past the sleeve of the glove and he bit me pretty good trying to hold on. Sure enough, he started to slip. However, instead of latching on with his beak, he tried to steady himself with his wings, and when that didn't work, he turned his head around and reached out, managing to grab his cage door.

I was amazed that he put himself at risk by reaching behind him, not knowing what was back there, to avoid biting me.

I don't know that liking me or not has ever really been the issue. I think the issue is that no one ever bothered to work with him on the biting. On either pressure training or just what is not okay to bite. It just sort of annoys me that the people who had him in the past didn't seem to think he needed any training once he lost his sight. I don't care if he's blind or not, that's no excuse for not having basic manners.

For a blind guy,he certainly seems to be trying to 'better" himself AND to show you he is capable of doing things himself. Of course your effort in trying to show him he can be more independent is a major plus.

Great job! and C'mon Tiki...we have faith in you!

I did find out that when we're eating, he definitely gets wound up. I took him out right after dinner, and he was biting the glove quite a bit and just generally wound up. He kept spinning around on my hand and just wouldn't sit still. So I will make a mental note that if I start trying to handle him without the glove, it won't be around dinner time.
