Paper on the bottom !!

First of all I want to thank this site for all the info I have learned about Eclectus parrots.
I would like to know what you all use on the bottom of the cage, I used newspaper on top of the floor bars should I put the paper under those bars on the tray`s ?

Yup, newspaper under the bars. If we placed the newspaper above, our Amazon would turn it in to a couple hundred pieces and would only add to the clean-up.

Personally, I have a couple of editorial writers that I assure that their pieces always sit under the rousting shot.

I am currently using a large roll of butcher paper, as it can be cut to size rather than overlapping newspaper sheets (may not be an issue with smaller cages where sheets fit or can be cut to size).

My *preference* though is to use a washable fabric cage liner. Shake it out, scrape off the poo and wash on hot, kinda the same concept as cloth baby diapers. Unfortunately, our new HOA would probably not agree with me shaking them out outside, so I'm using paper again

I also put paper on the bars,and in the tray underneath,,,and under and around her house

I bought 2 flat plastic oil drip tray (one for each cage), they were nearly perfect size depth wise, but about 10cm too long, so I cut them in half and overlapped them.

SCA Oil Drip Tray, Plastic - 950 x 650mm - Supercheap Auto

It works well, as I can easily lift them out and get them out the door, then hose them off and let dry.

That is a neat idea! It appears to be a hard plastic and cutting it should be fairly easy. The US sizing would be: 37.34" x 25.59" and a like product could be found at any Auto Supply Store, Auto Supply Big Box Store or on-line Auto Supplier.

Thank you for the oil pan suggestion I will measure and see if I can get one close to the size .. Great idea.. I wish my cage would go through the front door to the outside it would make things a lot easier .. I could take the wall out :23:

Bellas cage is about 32" x 40" and 73" tall and there's no way that's fitting through the door! It has the grill at the bottom which I leave bare, and I line the bottom tray (underneath) with a few layers of newspaper. I 'spot wash' bars where she's wiped her food from her beak with apple cider vinegar and water. When the cage needs deeper cleaning, I wash all the bars and grill, I also use a steam cleaner for bits I can't get to. The paper collects the dirty water in the bottom, and then I clean the bottom tray and put in fresh paper. But from reading this thread, I might try a "washable fabric cage liner" as suggested by Kiwibird!

I cut them with a thin blade on the angle grinder (a bit of melting, but it was quick and the excess plastic broke off easily when cool), a hacksaw or small tooth handsaw would have worked too.

I also use a Perspex feeder

This cuts down a lot on the mess in the cage and more importantly outside the cage: (my 2 like to throw the food around

). It's not the perfect design, having used it for about 3 months, if I made one myself, I would loose the roof and front and replace the fixed divider with a removable bowl (this would really speed up the cleaning of the feeder, but with that said, I still think they are a great idea)

It's just a standard H20 X5 I'm using at the moment. I tend to go over the cage with an absorbant micro fibre cloth after cleaning to avoid the risk of rusting. The steamer has got some handy scrubbing attachments too. I use one for the "polly's twister perch", as it's quite textured and it cleans up really well.

Another thread mentioned using puppy pads. I see you can get them with a drawstring, that would be awesome to use for eckies coz mine create a phenomenal mess and for some reason when I am taking out the used newspaper I always manage to stick my finger in some crap. I dont know whether we can get the drawstring puppy pads in Oz, but I think you can in the US.

I grab a stack of the "advertisements" newspaper (free, usually a TON of them at the post office) and use those. They fit perfectly, and are FREE!

And yes...under the bars on the catch tray. Keeps the mess out of the cage and out of reach.
