Confused need some guidance

Sponsored Links
Hi All!

As for my previous post on freezing chop i have decided to stick to fresh,i just cant get the hang of freezing.

At the moment i am only feeding veg and fruits more veggies :All washed before feeding
cooked pumpkin
cooked sweetpotato
broccoli
cauliflower
peas
corn
carrots
green beans

Fruits: strawberries,blueberries,grapes (no seeds)apple(no seeds),kiwi,papaya(no seeds).

I would like to get some expert advice ....of course from all of you and some things that works for you.

Sprouting seeds:How often should i feed this to my Ekkie, can i feed this everyday ?i have recently made my first sprouts with some sunflower seeds.

Budgie seed: I have read some posts were people mix in some budgie seed for Ekkies ?
Is this healthy? Do you mix it with veggies everyday?

Cooked brown rice : Can i feed this to Zazu everyday?

Veggies :Are there veggies that i should not feed everyday?

Aloooot of questions

Thank you
Jurilee&Zazu

Re: Confused need some guidance

Everything in moderation is how I would answer your question. It's ALL good (except the seed. Forget that).

Focus on high fiber, so the rice especially is great for most everyday. So are the sprouts.

The only thing that might be an issue is the blueberries. A forum member here found too many blueberries made their bird toe tap and wing flip. But that won't be the case for every bird.

Re: Confused need some guidance

You could sprout the budgie seed. That's what I do for my ekkies. They love them and are definitely better than just plain seed, which I personally wouldn't do at all

Re making and freezing chop, I have found that the more cooked ingredients you include the wetter the mix. I found Chris's chop recipe the best so far "Stressing the chop" thread I think in case you have not seen it. But really it is what ever works for you.

Re: Confused need some guidance

Hi Jurilee, when I make chop, its all raw stuuff. Its pretty wet when difrosted, so I will mix in some of his pellets to soak upm the extra moisture. that or oat groats or Avicakes. These all absorb the excess moisture and are all good for him. In fact we have used pizza crust to do the same thing. Salty will chow down hischap like that, no problem. Otherwise he is not too keen on eating chop if its too wet.

Re: Confused need some guidance

You've already gotten some good advice. I'll just cosign on sprouts being a good every day food. You might also want to try pomegranates as well. One of the most nutritional foods you can give. I'd definitely add some leafy greens like dandelion and endive, and I'd go light on the corn.

And as for veggies you should not feed every day? Spinach. Once in a while is fine, but it does have properties that block a bird's ability to absorb calcium.

On the other hand, dandelion and carrots are foods that can be given daily.

Re: Confused need some guidance

Hey, Jdt,

I almost passed this thread over because Ekkies are such a special challenge, and I figured I wouldn't have anything to contribute.
But... I just read through it and picked up a couple of ideas for myself! Just goes to shw ya (or show me) that even if you don't have something to ADD, ya might learn something!

Re: Confused need some guidance

Not sure about beetroot seeds, but here is a rather massive list of good sprouting foods: sprouts

Look down at the bottom of the page for the list.

Re: Confused need some guidance

Assuming, the beet seeds are actually intended to be eaten, and not grown into vegetables, then they'd be fine. I mean, I'm going to assume you've actually bought a bag of beet seeds from a health food store or something and not some random seed packet that has seeds that are coated in fertilizers and pesticides.

Hmm, I'd actually plant some in pots so that you can feed him beet leaves. The leaves are quite salty, but they're very nutritious. For example, they're a really good source for some extremely annoying nutrients to get adequate amounts of for parrots, such as manganese, pantothenic acid, and vitamin E.
