what sub species do i have?

I picked up KoKo last night he is so sexy. I was hope someone can help with identify his sub species. He has a 1 inch yellow strip at the bottom of his tail and yellow under wings. Also the red collar I have not seen before.

He's beautiful. Though I dare say he may loose the red collar after his first molt. Are you able to post pictures of his tail, the underside and from behind him? It might help with identification.

But if I had to guess based on the size of the yellow tail band you mentioned, I'd go for Aru (Red Sided) Eclectus (maybe a cross), due to the fact that you can't see any red on his flanks, that makes him look a bit like a Riedeli (Tanimbar Islands)...

Again, this is just a guess. Im hoping someone with more experience and expertise in this area will be able to chime in and advise!

A couple of the biggest indicators that can help narrow down male ekkie subspecies are:

1. Weight and length

2. the presence or absence of a green stripe along the primary feathers. Here is a photo of my red sided males primary:



3. The hue of the green feathers. It's not always easy to notice, except maybe in sunlight. The two colors are a darker forest green, and a lime/grass green. The difference is very subtle.

The red color is simply a random mutation, and atypical for this species. Not common at all but kinda cool.

Not knowing how your guy fits in to the key above based on your two photos, if you are located in the US the likely answer would be either a Solomons Island (smaller of the subspecies), Vosmaeri (larger, no green stripe on primary), or red sided (larger, with green stripe on primary).

Congratulations on your new ekkie! Make sure you read up on their diet. You can't get away with just seed based diet, and not too many pellets. Mostly fresh fruit/veg/grains, with emphasis on vitamin A and higher fiber.

Hello and welcome! Koko is beautiful, how old is he? In doing some Googling, I found a couple of places that say that the red may moult out, as Violet_Diva mentioned.

Koko is beautiful! And will remain so even if the red does eventually molt out. Very much looking forward to the additional pics you'll be posting!

We have a Dalma aka Red and a Turbo aka Green.
Dalma is 9, while Turbo is 8 months old now. They weigh 380 and 410grams.
They are bad birds in a sense, but they are very good in general. Unlike our previous bird, an alexandrine, they do not destroy antique furniture (yet).

Both are cuddly, the boy always, the hen is on her terms only.
The boy never ever bites, but growls if his pinecone is at stake, the hen is much more complicated.
