i have a 8 month male i have had him for the last couple of months he was self weaned by the breeder. he lives in a 40"x 30"x 72" cage he sure seems to be a pretty clumsy fella and falls at least a couple of times a day. is this normal? also he does a heck of a lot of chattering while he is sleeping, normal?

i will say im very happy with this new friend he has a great personality and while being weaned i was visiting a few times a week so when he came home
he was already used to the wife and myself. will also say he is a very quiet bird to be honest i don't think he has sounded off at all since coming home, nothing like our 16 yr old Umbl Cockatoo dang guy he barks like the dog, laughs like me and just don't know how to shut up,and screams with the best of em.lol but i would not trade it for anything.

TIA

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to the forums! I would be most concerned about falling several times daily. Parrots are generally nimble, particularly in a familiar environment. Have you checked his nails for length - this would be the easiest remedy if his claws are too long. If you hold him does he have strength of grip? Have you noticed other issues or symptoms that might not be related? My best advice is to take him to an avian-certified vet for a check.

I've seen parrots chatter and talk themselves to sleep, but once in deep slumber they are usually quiet. They're all different! The personalities of eclectus and cockatoos are really diverse!

Hi! While falling is a bit odd, it can happen if they have had a nail clip before you took him. Often vets or breeders might give a comfort clip (so that their nails dont dig in to your arm) but the birds arent used to the lack of grip and fall afterward. Ours used to crash around in his cage quite a bit but now (he is about 18 months old) I cant remember the last time he took a spill.

Our boy chatters a lot at night. We had the birds in our room for a while during some renovations and he would be saying "peekaboo!" in 20 different modulations starting from about 1AM.

I remember my breeder telling me babies can be clumsy but falling several times a day sounds like another problem.

Are the perches the right size?

hey thanks for the warm welcome and info. im thinking it might be my fault i changed his cage out after a month because i was not happy with him in the 32" octagon cage i had got for him which he did not fall in. he has been in the new cage for 3 weeks and it took one of those for him to loosen up about the change. so now im stuck with a $500 cage, oh no can't have that, cage worked out perfect for a sweet Lilac Crowned Amazon i decided to bring home, don't ya just luv them bird's,they can make ya do some funny things.lol

i have a bunch of different sizes in his house. you know when i see it happen he is usely on one of his toys,he spends a ton of time upside down climbing in the top of his cage. one time i caught him falling out of his water dish trying to get a bath. first one so he was easy to spray bottle train as all the others we have are. i also keep chameleons so im used to having to use a spray bottle for pets.

thanks for the response

I think it depends what kind of falling youre referring to. If you mean straight up falling off his perch for no good reason, take him to the vet. If he is falling due to being clumsy and "getting into" something hes doing like a bath and not realize where he is or something that seems like an accident, I wouldnt be as worried, but if it persists or worsens I would consult a vet. If it seems like something a clumsy baby would do, and not due to weakness or inability to hold on, its probably just that, but keep an eye out. He should stop falling as he gets older and his grip tightens and also as he gets more used to the cage.

Our babies at that age were falling all the time, they were very clumsy. It was almost funny how many times they just plain lost their grip while climbing or perching.
Although I'd keep my eye on it. Our girl did get injured and probably suffered a concussion, and she was falling off her perch in her sleep randomly at least once a night for a week or two. Not good.
If you're really in doubt, take your birdo in to get checked out.

Hello, and welcome. My female is almost a year and a half old, and she still falls in her cage on occasion, usually when she is fighting with a toy and apparently looses. :D I agree with what others have said though, that if he is playing or otherwise engaged in an activity where it would make sense that he may fall, I would say probably just being clumsy, but if he is just perching and falls, you should get him to an AV soon.

As far as chatter while he's sleeping, my male does it all the time. Sometimes it is frustrating because he has a screaming problem, so i always try to talk and engage him when he chooses to talk instead, and I'll be talking to him for half a hour when I look over and his head is tucked under his wing, napping away. So there I was, talking to myself.

Google parakeet talks himself to sleep for a treat. A keet named Disco has many videos on YouTube of himself learning to talk, talking in his sleep, and generally being unbearably cute.
