first off thanks for the help and all the great bird folks here.

my question is i want to get some of my birds outside in the summer months with Maxx i plan of keeping his wings clipped for the first couple of years so flight is not a real problem cept im disabled and don't move to quick. i don't care for the harnesses anyone in the know on if these birds can be trained with an leg strap like that people working with birds of pray use?

TIA

Hi,
With a leg strap, you can easily cripple your bird! Not a good idea!
FYI, a properly clipped bird can easily catch a breeze and get lost!
And, a hawk will think nothing of snatching your baby right off your shoulder! You will never see it coming!

Either use a harness or a carrier/small cage you can bring out to let him get some fresh air. Parrots dont have the same leg muscles as falcons or hawks; in many parts of the world jesses are used for parrots, but anyone with knowledge on the subject and vets will tell you not to use them. Not worth a broken/dislocated leg and possible lifetime injury.

Do not ever, ever, ever take any bird outside without a harness!!!! IT MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE IF THEY HAVE CLIPPED WINGS OR NOT, EVERY DAY I SEE POSTS OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD THEIR BIRD WITH CLIPPED WINGS OUTSIDE AND THEY HAVE FLOWN AWAY!!!

It only takes a little wind under them and they work like a glider, it happens every day. And as stated above, if you let your bird outside free, clipped or not, a hawk, owl, or other predator bird will swoop down, grab it, and that's it! And if you can't move quickly then they could easily get away from you anyway and be hit by a car, attacked by a dog or other animal, stolen, or just fly away.

Why don't you like harnesses? I have 4 Aviator Harnesses for 4 different birds, and it is by far the best harness available. It's safe and secure, allows your bird to walk with you or fly with you, it allows them to glide to the ground and not crash, and your bird won't be injured by it. Really it's the only way to take your bird's outside safely and not have them fly away, run away, or be hurt or killed. Unless you keep them in a cage or carrier, which isn't nearly as fun for them...just get an Aviator Harness and be done with it...DO NOT LET A BIRD WITH CLIPPED WINGS OUTSIDE FREE!!!

YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!!

Harnesses, I have yet to see a bird that was not trying to get out of it. and the first time I tried to get one on Maxx it was nothing but a fight and I ended up cutting it off of him before I could get it off of him. I do know better then no restraint no outside.
I bet it would have helped if I would have watched the video.
manuals ,manuals ,manuals ,don't need no stinking manuals.lol

my birds are coming from the Bakers Nest Aviary which was the Hartman Aviary. now Hartman kept the harness business so I do know of the harnesses so I guess I will make a appt at the store and get some harness training.

If you start them young it's much easier, and yes, I know what you're saying about it being difficult, especially if the bird is older. The videos show you step by step how to introduce the harness to the bird so he's not afraid, etc. I've never had any of my guys try to get it off, as soon as we get outside they forget they have it on in the first place..
