Hi.this is Winston. Last week I got a baby eclectus parrot and he was eating well the first week but now he just sleeps and doesn't want to eat. I've raised lots of different birds from Eagles Hawks to pigeons and sparrows. But I've never had this problem. And he's not my first eclectus I've hand fed five other eclectus parrots and they did fine. So I was hoping for some advice and tips on feeding. And healthcare.

I would have taken him to the vet already but I live in port Moresby and there is no vet here that treats birds.. There is only one vet in the whole city and he only treates dogs and cats. I once took a sick black kite to him and he said he knows nothing about birds. All the sick birds I have had I've treated at home. And I've only ever lost two birds a barn owl and goshawk and they had a terrible case of aspergillosis when I trapped them and they died the next week. Every thing else I've been able to successfully cure. So if any one knows what my bird might have please let me know. He is sleepy he doesn't want to eat and he's shivering.

Ok; in that case we will do our best.

How old is the bird?
What is the temperature in his enclosure?
How often are you feeding?
At what temperature are you feeding the food?
How long ago was the food purchased?
What does his poop look like?
Is he making any noises?
Where is he kept in your house?
How much was he eating before, and how much is he willing to eat now?
Do you have a crop tube?

And can you please post a picture of his crop?

He's about 6weeks old
The out side temperature is 29c I have a warm bottle in with him so in his box it's about 33c
We are trying to feed him every two hours because he's hardly eating at each feeding
We were heating the food slightly. About to baby bottle temperature
The food is fresh bananas and mangos mashedup each time we feed him we make a fresh batch
The fecal is a dark brown blob the urin and urate are clear
He makes some noise when feeding but he isn't as noisy as he was last week
We keep him in a nesting basket I used for my Hawks we have shredded newspaper in it to keep him warm. We move the basket to where ever we are so we can keep a eye on him
Before he would eat until his crop was tight and after his crop was empty we would feed him again. Now he won't take any food at all and I've had to force some down. I've been doing water therapy were every few minutes you give him water it flushes his system it's worked on a lot of my sick baby Hawks.
I don't have a crop tube and I don't know how to use one.

You need to get him into a brooder and get him up to about 36.7C.

You need to get a confection thermometer and heat the formula EXACTLY to between 40C and 42.2C.

You need a much more varied food; those alone are grossly inadequate nutritionally speaking.

The temperature things alone may be sufficient to perk him up; I'm honestly amazed that your previous babies have survived without this knowledge.

I'll try to say more when I have more time.

We were feeding him sweet potatoes pumpkin but when he started not eating he would take some and drop it all over himself then he would get dirty and damp. So we switched to the banana and mango because it's more watery and goes down easier. I don't have a incubator you can't buy them here. So I just put another warm water bottle. I mixed a little oats into his food. But he won't take it he just spits it out. The other eclectus parrots I raised were much older like 9-10 weeks so after a few days they were eating by themselves. And keeping birds of prey are very different from parrots. Baby rators don't need there food heated in the wild they would catch game and by the time the baby's got the meat it would be room temperature. Also we've been having rain storms her so it's hard to keep things warm.

just wondering how did come across this bird did someone sell it to you
without it being properly weaned?
you know now that I have given this a little thought something smells funny about the post a 4 to 6 week chic in the hands of someone who seems to have no knowledge of what to do to get it to eat, not to mention the bird is at an age where it needs to be incubated and fed with a formula instead of a bunch of mashed up stuff. if I remember right Maxx was not even pinning feathers till he was 6 weeks old,and spent 22 weeks being crop fed formula. like I said something smells here.

Hi sorry for the late reply got back to school so it's been a hectic week. My baby eclictus sadly passed away last week but two days before I got him checked by some wildlife park curators and they said he had coccidiosis. And there was nothing I could do it was to far on.
About where I got the bird new Giunea is a third world country. There are no laws protecting animals from being trap just laws that prevent them from being taken out of the country. There is only one native animal that is officially protected the birds of paradise but not even that law is enforced. There are no pet stores eather and very poor education. That's why I do home school. So the birds I get are ones caught by local trappers and sold they sell them for about 50 US dollars. I really prefer to trap my own birds but lots of people hear I'm looking for one and want to help get one. And they will bring any bird they can find. The best eclectus parrot I had was a wild adult male that I had to man but after he was very tame and nice. Yeah but that's how it works here. I wasn't even looking for a bird when they brought the eclictus to the house. But I don't think I'm going to have a parrot for a while. I'm going to trap a Gurney's eagle.

Yeah The biggest problems I have with raising baby birds I have is keeping them warm enough I don't have a incubator and its a real problem when I got one of my kites she was only a week old a had to put two warm bottles in a box with her and sleep with my hand gently over her to keep her warm enough. So if anyone has ideas on how to keep baby birds warm without electricity it would be very helpful. I was thinking about getting a chicken to incubate my baby birds.

I'm not really sure what to think here. It sounds like what you are describing is a bird that was far to young to be separated from it's mother, that was taken from its nest and you purchased from a trapper, who are comming to your house with any bird they can trap as you have expressed interest. You have either trapped or purchased other birds (you mention having several other eclectus parrots in the past), yet as you say you are at school, at the very least, I am somewhat concerned as to what has happened to all these birds you once owned and why you would feel the need to take more from the wild.

I'm going to assume you are just trolling, but if not, I hope I am misunderstanding what you have described.

I had to back off this myself because it just pisses me off to no end.
someone ought to draft a letter to the government over there about this crap going on. trapping parrots. if there is no pet trade over there as described why in the hell would the locals trap the birds to begin with.

one lie caught: I do home school: so he must be using a computer at home
yet he tells us no electricity to run an incubator.

if it was up to me this whole thread would go away.
as to not implant the stupid idea to anyone to go out and trap some parrots.
thinking there is money to be made.
