Maxx is 8 months old and I have been able to teach him a few things and I can hear him saying them but sometimes it is pretty hard to understand. how long does it take these guys to get a clear voice?

he has got way more vocal and active over the last couple of weeks I think he has finely gotten used to it here and the program.kind of silly he loves to get on the counter top and clear it off as he knocks things off he likes to look over the counter and wait for me to pick them up so he can knock them off again

Yellow Shoulder Amazon, Salty
Thats funny - one of Saltys tricks is to throw one specific thing over the side. This one specific foot toy. He would much rather keep stuff on the table, to chew and destroy. If ekkies are anything like Amazons, they say stuff in their own good time. Both my past parrot, Maxie, and Salty, talk to themselves, working things out, and then whomp - there it is.

talk to themselves, working things out

that is what I figured they where doing I have 3 of them that chatter a lot and while chattering I hear what I'm teaching them, thought maybe they where practicing before going live. Sammy does this a lot and only while the cage is covered.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Eclectus can have excellent voice quality! Angel speaks infrequently, but has a distinctly human tone. My late Sasquatch was the clearest talker I've had. He sounded like a little boy and had a vocabulary of roughly 10 words/phrases.

Jasper (6yr old Solomon Island Eclectus Parrot)
Jasper speaks crystal clear, it's amazing. I'd say after about a year is when he started talking more, before then it was just a couple little things. Then he 'found his voice' and talks non-stop.

The biggest thing I noticed last year was that not only was he talking more, but using the right words/phrases in context. He never ceases to amaze me.

that's why I ask sometimes during his chatter some of it comes out sounding clear and like a child. cool Maxx and the dog are also building a relationship the dog will sit outside the cage sniffing Maxx and jumping around when his beak get close to the cage, and Maxx seems to be having fun to he will push a ball on his floor to where the dog is cool to watch. yesterday I had them both on the couch and the dog was having a blast jumping around avoiding Maxx's beak as he chased him around.

Some eclectus are "closet talkers", saving their best words and phrases for when they think you're not around. Lol! Both of my ekkies speak very clearly, but Maya is the only one you might mistake for a human. She mimics my wife perfectly.

Earliest I've heard an ekkie begin speaking clearly and consistently was at around 2 or 3 months. But of course the when will vary with each individual bird.

Btw, not to be the wet blanket or anything, but please make sure to exercise extreme caution when dealing with a bird and a predatory animal such as a dog. While they may indeed have developed something of a friendship dynamic between them, at the end of the day they are still predator and prey. No matter how well trained your dog, it only takes one slip of control for things to go horribly wrong. Not saying this will happen in the case of your particular dog... just that it could.

Parker (about 1 1/2) speaks a lot but aside from "Where's Parker...peekaboo!" in 30 different intonations, it can be hard figuring out what he is saying. Because he is repeating what we say, we usually pick it up. When he is cross he sounds like Donald Duck.

Bird (about 4) is a closet talker. She pretty much wont say anything when you look at her but has an enormous vocab when she is by herself and away from Parker. She had come from a fellow who lived in the bush with a very strong and nasal Australian accent, and he had a dog Toohey (named after a brand of beer). So every so often we hear in the guy's voice "Toohey!...Toohey!...come here!...Toohey!!...Toohey! Get back here now!...Toohey!!!!...F#@'n F#@'n F#@'n!!!..". You can actually picture the dog running toward the road with the guy chasing it.

The Rb has surprising mimicry of songs, words, phrases, noises, etc., but it is ALL in that cartoon-y funny squawky parrot voice. Plus, he has trouble pronouncing his Ns. Even so, most people understand him pretty well.
