Grip.

I have spoke about this in another thread but I could not find it. Ok Maxx is still falling at times. I have noticed when I have him out he grips a finger just right not to much but you feel his nails. transition to forearm not so much nails anymore and becomes unstable in his movements. today he fell off the main log on the playstand 2 and a half inch and snapped a wing feather. and at least a couple of times a day I hear him hit the bottom of the cage to look up and he is rushing to get back up the side, now something about this fella he is just full of energy he is all over his cage all the time playing on all levels with all kinds of toys I have in there most of the time he is falling off of the toys. I have a ladder flat going across because of this falling I figured more for him to walk on or maybe it would stop a fall or two, but oh no he has taken to hanging upside and walking on the bottom and funny as hell sometimes he will get halfway across and just let go, hit the bottom of the cage on his back flip over and go back and do it again. I'm starting to think the falling is just normal play. but on the grip thing I did notice today the nail may need trimmed could that be causing some of this?

also got to say at 9 months he is turning into quite a card, no sense in thinking he is going to play on his cage or playstand if I'm not close to it he ain't either. he has taken to having to be right with me or next to me when ever he is out and if I leave him on the cage he is flying to me. as for these guys not liking to be petted and handled, I can pet him anywhere handle his wings rub his feet, he is starting to find his voice and his chatter is coming out much clearer, so far he does pretty boy maxx, what ya doing, laughs like me and barks like the dog he is a blast to have and take care of and I am so glad he has come into my life.

Dave has he found his Amazon voice yet? Salty found his around 7-8 months, usually int he afternoon, while he is hanging from his bell or other hanging toys and bu one foot. The Amazon voice is LOUD. It almost sounds like a distress call and Salty's gets progressively louder, then all of a sudden stops. But sorry, I got nothing on the grip business other then what was said in another thread. Maybe a good case for a thick thick layer of wood shavings on the bottom of his cage.

Hi, have you had Maxx the eclectus checked out by your AV? Just a bit concerned re his falling all the time? Birds don't normally fall unless something is wrong. Give you chance to have his nails filed a little also? WDYT? He sounds adorable by the way, think I can feel a video coming on?

Yeah, Dave. I think you definitely need to get your ekkie in to an avian vet. Some ekkies can be clumsier than others, no doubt. Jolly vs Maya is a prime example of that. Maya has fallen maybe once in the past 2 plus years, whereas Jolly might fall maybe 3 or 4 times in a given year. But the frequency you are describing is worrying. I'm not saying that there is definitely something wrong, but it definitely warrants a wellness check.

And yes, overly long nails can potentially be the cause. Nails that have grown to the point that they have curved beyond the point of climbing utility can actually become a hindrance and cause falls. But a good avian vet should be able to tell you if this is the case with Maxx while checking for any other possible medical causes.

he will be seeing the breeder/ aviary folks this week for a trim and maybe a little
trim on the upper sides of his beak. my birds will always go there before a vet is used. the aviary is a business and not just someone breeding birds at home with I think around 100 breeding pairs. I will let them tell me where they would go with it or if it's a problem at all. I trust these folks and if they say go to the vet , he goes to the vet.
that is one thing that is cool about the people I got Maxx from if it is one of their hand raised babies then the grooming is free forever. big savings in the end and while there you are having your bird looked at by folks that can see things we can't as owners, and it is also a great time to get all those questions answered by a professional

Hopefully there is nothing wrong with Maxx and a nail trim will help. Please be sure to discuss the situation fully with the breeder so they can give you the most informed advice. If they are on the fence, a trip to an AV may be most helpful.
