2nd Ecletus Maybe

I am looking at some males to possibly purchase, we have a female red sided and I am looking at some male Solomon islands. Is there any issues having any 2 different sub species.

Has anyone heard of Lilly with Solely Solomon Aviaries, I have been looking at either a baby or maybe a 1 to 2 year old.

Any advise on getting a baby or young adult.

now im flipping confused.
i thought red sided where the males
and all females where purple and red, but i never
herd the term red sided female used before.
anyone clear this up for me .

Dave, do a quick google search. There are several different subspecies of eclectus. It is its own thing in the ekkie world. Red sided, Solomon island, biaki, etc...

Socalguy, theres nothing wrong with it at all as long as you don't intent to breed them.

Agreed, it shouldn't make much difference; of course even birds of even the same species/sub-species aren't guaranteed to get along!

I pick up two eclectus from Lily next week. She has been great so far, sending pictures, their current diet and other useful info. I will post again next Saturday to let you know.

Yeah, Dave. Like Chris said, Red-sided is simply a sub-species of eclectus parrots, just like Solomon Island, Grand, Vosmaeri, etc. While not quite so large as a Vos, the Red-sided is significantly larger than the Solomon Island, which is the most common eclectus sub-species in the US. Bixby, my first eclectus, was a red-sided ekkie.

I picked up my 2 birds from Lilly today. They are really sweet. I was able to get them both to step up from their carrier so that I could carry them to the cage. They seem to have been well treated and are as comfortable as they can be in a strange place. Theyve played with their toys and have chattered a bit here and there. I live close to Lilly, though, so I was able to meet her out to pick them up. Good luck on your decision!

We have been looking for a second bird still and yesterday we meet some baby Mexican Red Headed Amazons. I was thinking this was the one, but on the way home we stopped at the store where we found Belle and they had a two year old male salmon island. Now we feel like he needs to be saved, he seemed sweet and came to both us right away. He is missing a lot of feathers on the back of is neck so we think he is nervous. We don't want a boy causing Belle to lay eggs ,does anyone know if this will be a problem. They will have there own cages but be in the same room.

I don't have any issues like that with my ekkie pair, but that might just be because both are bonded to me instead of each other. Depends on the individual birds, and no one can really predict what might happen with any given combination of two birds in one household.

What I can point out, however, is that many female parrots lay eggs even without a male around to serve as a trigger. You'll want to avoid potential catalysts of hormonal behavior in general, such as longer daylight hours, touching on the back or under the wings, or foods too high in sugar.

Also, there are a few members on this forum who, like me, have a male/female pairing of ekkies and manage just fine. But again, every bird is different.

So we went ahead and bought Ziggy yesterday, he is doing good so far and Bella isn't sure what to think. He seems happy and is saying hello, he does have that Ekkie scream and did it a few times yesterday. Hopefully this will subside as he gets use to all of us.

Congrats on your Eclectus Parrots. If you don't do this already would keep them in separate cages if you cage. And keep an eye on the girl as I have found some of my ladies do not enjoy the boys... Males seem more receptive to other males but sometimes once both a sexually mature the ladies can be a little bit of a bully to the boys.

Ziggy has a band and it reads BBR MI 02 #44, a local breeder told me today that the 02 is for the year which puts him at 15 not 2 like we were told. This may explain why he is so mellow and well mannered for the most part. Ive been searching online for the breeder to match this code but no luck. If anyone has any insight let me know.

From what I've been told, there isn't really any regulation or set format for how bands must be coded. As such, that 2 could really refer to anything. It all depends on how that individual breeder thinks. Some adhere to a similar format, and can therefore deduce what a particular number probably means, but unless the breeder you spoke to either knows the maker of that particular band or is familiar with his/her work, there's just no way to be absolutely certain. Well... short of locating said breeder.

the breeder I have been to uses that as the year as well so very well could be 15. I think they went with species, Breeder initials, year, then the order in which they're rung
