Please HELP! Need advice on my Eclectus

Hello everyone! I am a new parent to an 18 month old Eclectus by the name of Pablo. We have had him for 3 months and just recently noticed some swelling on his legs and his wing. Took him to the Vet and they said it might be a bone growth disorder. Spoke with the breeder/owner and they both stated that both parents are healthy and have had more healthy babies. Previous owner stated it might just be an infection and NOT a bone disorder. Just seeking on some advice/help or if this has happened to someone else. Please take a look at pics. Thank you everyone! We love or Pablo very much and just want to help him.

Did you take him to an AVIAN CERTIFIED vet? Any old vet, even an "exotics" vet isn't going to be qualified to handle most things with a bird. Please take him to an AVIAN vet asap!

have him get an xray to confirm or rule out come growth. if it's not bone growth have an avian vet take samples and have labs done could be cancer, could be benign, could be a simple absence. there's really a lot a bump could be.

Yes we did take him to an AVIAN certified vet. He is the one recommending the x-rays and blood work. Thank you for your response.

That the parents and other offspring are healthy may or may not be significant. Genetic abnormalities can either be passed in an orderly manner or random. Hope it is neither, and is an easily curable event!

A blood panel and X-Ray seems a logical start. Are you familiar with the dietary needs of Eclectus? If you are, forgive the question, but Ekkies require nutrition significantly different from most other parrots!

Hi, They are unlikely to admit this even if it was IMO. You need to go through the process with the Avian vet to get to the bottom of things. We all hope Pablo will be Ok. Please keep posting updates

I would trust what the avian vet is saying, not the prior owner. I am sure the vet has run appropriate tests to rule out infection. Have they done x-rays etc... to look at the bone structure? Just like in humans, birds too can have spontaneous genetic abnormalities neither parent nor other siblings have.

A rare genetic defect in a parrot would likely not even have a name, but if you have a good vet they may be able to help find a treatment through trial and error or help you to help your bird live a happy and as healthy of a life as possible.

And that's what we plan on doing. Just getting the funds built up as you know vet bills for birds are not a small price tag. But our Pablo is worth it!

Hello EVERYONE! Here is an update on our Pablo and it's great NEWS!!!!!
X-rays were done and the swelling on Pablo's legs is not anything that is terminal. The x-rays show that at a very early age Pablo must have fallen and he has 2 fractured legs. His body overtime has compensated for this and has healed him BUT the bones still remain fractured. Pablo is still able to walk, he feels no pain and will be just fine. The bulge in his legs is the build up of callus. Which is the bony healing tissue that forms around the ends of a broken bone. And the swelling he had on his right wing is an infection but is being treated with some antibiotics. We left that Veterinarians office full of joy and we sang and cried (tears of joy) ALL THE WAY HOME! THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU for your wonderful posts and advice! We are eternally grateful to this chat forum!
