So I had a stand custom built for Tiki, since the java tree stand I had wasn't level enough for him to be comfortable with. Surprisingly, Chicken and him have been able to be on it together quite a bit. She hasn't exactly been nice to him, but she hasn't been mean either. She picks on him a little, but not aggressively. She'll do little things, I think to take advantage of his blindness, like sit above him and drop pellets on his head to watch him jump. Yes, she is naughty.
However, today, I saw her do something I never thought I'd see her do with any other bird, considering how much she doesn't like anyone. She was sitting slightly above Tiki on the stand and was actually bending down and preening him. Just gently preening the feathers on his back and a few on the top of his wings. After a few minutes I picked him up and moved him back in his cage because he started to look uncomfortable, but I couldn't believe how nice she was being. Especially with how mean she's been with the whole puberty thing lately. It was nice to see the sweet side of Chicken today, especially towards old Tiki.
It also makes me happy that perhaps she can get along with other Ekkies after all. I have tossed around the idea of using her as a breeder in the future, instead of getting a pair like I had originally intended. Although she is my baby, I really think she would make an excellent breeder. I think she has the personality and instincts that would make her a really good parent. Plus, since her and I have such a good relationship already, I would hope that if she does become a breeder, it would allow me to co-parent the chicks, instead of having to hand-feed, which I think it better for the chicks overall, especially with Ekkies. I would be looking at getting a young, tame SI male to try and pair her with, so that I could also build a bond with him to allow co-parenting as well. Plus, if they end up not liking each other, just means I have another ekkie to have to spoil with love and affection. Oh well, what a shame that would be.
