So I had a stand custom built for Tiki, since the java tree stand I had wasn't level enough for him to be comfortable with. Surprisingly, Chicken and him have been able to be on it together quite a bit. She hasn't exactly been nice to him, but she hasn't been mean either. She picks on him a little, but not aggressively. She'll do little things, I think to take advantage of his blindness, like sit above him and drop pellets on his head to watch him jump. Yes, she is naughty.

However, today, I saw her do something I never thought I'd see her do with any other bird, considering how much she doesn't like anyone. She was sitting slightly above Tiki on the stand and was actually bending down and preening him. Just gently preening the feathers on his back and a few on the top of his wings. After a few minutes I picked him up and moved him back in his cage because he started to look uncomfortable, but I couldn't believe how nice she was being. Especially with how mean she's been with the whole puberty thing lately. It was nice to see the sweet side of Chicken today, especially towards old Tiki.

It also makes me happy that perhaps she can get along with other Ekkies after all. I have tossed around the idea of using her as a breeder in the future, instead of getting a pair like I had originally intended. Although she is my baby, I really think she would make an excellent breeder. I think she has the personality and instincts that would make her a really good parent. Plus, since her and I have such a good relationship already, I would hope that if she does become a breeder, it would allow me to co-parent the chicks, instead of having to hand-feed, which I think it better for the chicks overall, especially with Ekkies. I would be looking at getting a young, tame SI male to try and pair her with, so that I could also build a bond with him to allow co-parenting as well. Plus, if they end up not liking each other, just means I have another ekkie to have to spoil with love and affection. Oh well, what a shame that would be. :D

How very sweet. And I know I shouldn't have laughed when you talked about her dropping pellets on his head...but her cleverness in getting up to no good is sort of amusing.

I shouldn't have laughed the times she would sneak up behind him, tap him on the back of the head to freak him out and run away either, but I did. She didn't hurt him, just startled him but it still wasn't nice. It's a good thing he's a patient old guy.

Wow, that's especially surprising since ekkies, as a species, tend not to be into the whole allopreening thing. (And from the sounds of it, Tiki leans more toward the typical ekkie disposition on the issue. Lol!)

Maybe Chicken's trip down puberty lane has her looking at Tiki in a whole new light. Hahaha!

Honestly, I'm sort of jealous, truth be told. Lately it seems Chicken is more fond of Tiki than me. Stupid hormones. At least she is still being sweet to some one.

So Chicken was being even more...forward with Tiki today. He actually decided to let her preen his wings. So I guess she took that as an invitation to be even more friendly. She got down on the same perch as him and snuggled up pretty close. They were okay at first. Then she tried to preen the little feathers around his beak, and he was not thrilled. At first, he tried just shaking his head to get her to stop, but she insisted. I will give him that at least when he really had enough, he just smacked her with the side of his beak, he didn't actually bite her. Then he scooted as far away from her as he could. Poor birds. Chicken just wants Tiki to love her. Tiki just wants Chicken to leave him the hell alone.
