pointy beak

Moses my Eclectus has a very pointy beak. He does not like to play with his toys and he doesnt chew much. I can occasion get him yo play with a rock or plastic bead, but not enough to keep his beak from growing long. I want to know if I should file it with a diamond file like I use on his toes...I know his beak is super sensitive.

Normally, I would recommend that only a Certified Avian Vet and/or a Certified Avian Vet Tech should ever file the Beak of a Parrot. That said, that could be very difficult for you to find that support.

Since you are comfortable with using a diamond file on your Parrots toe nails you can take that skill set to make minor adjustments your Parrots Beak.

Yes, the Beak is very sensitive and any filing should be limited to removing only small amounts from the tip of the Beak. Then allowing at least a week before another small amount is removed. Watch very carefully for any signs of sensitivity in use of the Beak after each filing. Any indication of sensitivity in use of the Beak will require halting additional filing for a least a month.

Assure you have a reference photo of a Eclectus with a healthy Beak and assure that you do not file to that length. Your Parrot's Beak should be left longer. Only the Parrot should bring the Beak to that length as they will know at what point is becomes painful /dangerous.

While you are filing, assure that the filings are falling away from the Beak and not into the Beak!

When he first became my pet he had a time period in which his beak grew long but then the pointy part seemed to shed itself...but this time I dont see the same indicators that his beak will shed. I just hope he doesnt have difficulty in scooping up his grains. And the point is tend on my skin

Hi! If you haven't done it before I would take him to an avian vet and ask to be shown how to do this properly. Even then for the first time doing it on your on I would get an experienced bird owner to help you so you can do this by causing minimal trauma to your bird. I think it is wonderful you are thinking of beak trimming though, you are an awesome parront! <3
