Canker?

It looks like Jasper has a canker on his tongue. It's white, located about halfway up his tongue towards the side.

Appetite/behaviour normal.

Is it possible for them to get cankers?? It's nearly impossible for me to get a picture b/c it's hard enough getting him to let me open his beak wide enough to even see it!

Thanks

Aw jasper! Something like that I'd get him to a vet. I wouldn't think with birds that is something to brush off.

I'm wondering if it's from a toy or something...like a piece of wood. I remember hearing once that might cause things like that hmm...

I'll see in the morning what it looks like...

Whatever it was, it fell off. It was stuck inside his mouth this morning (off the tongue) and now it's gone completely. Everything seems fine....

Maybe it was a piece of something, be it from a wood toy or even food, that was just sitting on the side of his tongue when you saw it.

Update:

Well, a few days later I noticed the spot again. White raised sore/lesion/I don't know what on the side of his tongue.

After spending $25 on an Uber to get him to the vet, I get there and they don't have any power. There was a bad storm in Montreal and trees were broken in half all over the place. They couldn't call ahead to say not to go b/c no power = no computer!

Anyway they tried to examine him in the front of the room with flashlights but obviously that didn't work so well. So after Jasper is in the dark being toweled and lights all over him it's determined he has to go back on the weekend for a proper look.

:(

The vet wants to sedate him so she can get a better look at his tongue. She says it could be a fungal infection, something stuck in his tongue or a mass of some-sort.

I've been checking his mouth twice a day and this morning it didn't look as bad. I'd be kind of surprised if it was an infection b/c he's had yeast infections before after being on antibiotics and it doesn't look the same. I'm hoping it's just a sore from a toy or something and it will clear up on its own. He doesn't play with it and if I didn't grab a glance of it I never would have known anything was there.

His behaviour/eating/etc is 100% normal. His appointment is Saturday.

I really hope it's gone....don't like the idea of him being sedated and having someone dig around his mouth :(

Wow. I'll be watching for an update on this, Katie. Jasper's lucky to have a parront who is so observant. I'm hoping right along with you that it's something minor that will go away on its own.

Hey guys,

So I took Jasper back to the vet yesterday. They sedated him to check his tongue, but the vet came back out and said he was "pretty drunk" but was still clenching down too hard with his beak to get a look. So she asked me for permission to give anesthesia. He's never had it before and she went over the risks with me, and I agreed.

After she came out and said he was fine but they had to stop before she was finished because his heart rate was suddenly doing a lot of roller-coaster up and downs so they took him off it immediately. :(

She said he had an abscess on his tongue that burst as soon as she touched it. She tried to clean it out as much as possible but that's when she had to stop. She said she would have liked to have been in there longer.

She said maybe a splinter or anything might have pierced his tongue and that it was just dumb luck.

Jasper is on pain meds for 3 days (although he doesn't seem like he needs them since he's playing and everything is good) and an anti-biotic until at least next weekend when I have to bring him back.

So glad I brought him in. Still can't believe I noticed it considering how far back it was but he seems in good spirits today (recovered after a couple hours yesterday) and eating fine. He's such a sweetheart and even remembered how we do meds from before and takes them so well.

An abscess that burst...could it have been a blister? Did he eat any (temperature) hot human food? I know it's a long shot but I could see my clark biting something to hot for his mouth to take (pizza).

I'm glad it wasn't anything more serious, Katie. Hopefully the antibiotics will clear out any remaining infection despite the fact the vet had to stop the procedure prematurely.

Jasper is a little trooper. And he has a great mom! (Still impressed that you caught the abscess so quickly considering its location! Go, Katie!)

Thanks guys :)

Not sure about the food temperature. Maybe there's a possibility when I gave him corn on the cob it might have been too hot still....no clue.

He really is a trooper! <3

Guys, the abscess is still there :( It looks like it refilled. I'm so upset.

His next appointment is this Saturday and he's still on antibiotics.....

Ah Katie, your poor little man. Upsetting that it looks like it has come back but those antibiotics will do some good. Worth checking all parts of his cage/playstand, toys, for anything that could have been the culprit and pierced his tongue just in case? My hunch rather than hot food.

Absolutely fabulous that he knows how to do meds, wow!

Get well soon Jasper.
