I’ve recorded a couple days of greetings from Parker when I walk into his room for the first time every morning for the first time.

Couple days back I got a “Hi Bud!” This is probably my favorite greeting of his

And yesterday I got a nice “Hi Parkerdoodles!”

This actually presents a great speech training opportunity, which I’ll highlight in case anyone is interested in learning. He’s learning a little bit of talking in context, as you can see from these videos. He’s greeting me with hi or hello. But he calls me Parkerdoodles! That’s not my name! Talking in context means he greets me as me. If I were so inclined, here is how I would train this more:

1. Start greeting him with a neutral greeting, which I’ve done. I’ve started greeting him with “hey bud!” You can use “hi dad/Mom/[insert your name]”.

2. DONT ever react to any greeting where he uses his name, “hey Parker!” Ignore to extinction of the behavior.

3. Favorite-treat any use of the neutral greeting if it develops..

Where I went wrong here is I fervently react to “hey Parkerdoodles” because I’m greedy and value larger vocabulary over contextual use.

Enjoy!

for me it's at night, when we are settling down and he's getting comfy Clark starts mumbleing and experimenting new sounds up a storm...I think to get attention, "we can stay up a little later...." He will repeat stuff I say but I don't count it as a known word until he uses it during the day.

Oliver used to love to say "Hi Oliver!" - in fact he said his name more than anything else. And come to think of it, it was in context...because what he meant was "pay attention to me!"

Sweet videos! I love Parker's voice! FWIW, I'd be greedy too, "Parkerdoodles" is just adorable in any context. Thanks for posting the training methods, I made the mistake of laughing when Harry started calling me, "Cameron" she still calls me Cameron and giggles occasionally even though she knows my name.

I wish I could take credit for “Parkerdoodles”. Unfortunately I’m horrible with nicknames and would never have thought of it. He came with it.

Clark - i would count it. Parker has some stuff I only ever hear at night, like when he sings that old guys and dolls song “I love you, a bushel and a peck”

Loved the vids, Chris! Especially the last one! And those were some solid tips for in-context talking! (Though you'd have to be pretty hardcore to ignore "Parker Doodles" to extinction. Hahaha! I know I couldn't do it!)

I am not a big Ekkie fan, except for their voices, so clear, and sweet sounding. You do such a good job with Parker, I'm sure it inspires all the ekkie owners on here to work closer with their parrots. . Salty says a few things in context - Good Morning, Hi Daddy, Hi Geri, Hi Erik. But also he says stuff at random - wha cha doing, Good boy, Tinker (our dog), Lou Ferrigno (?), Up, Daddiiieeee, Yum yum yum yum and of course his own name Salty. And 4 different laughs, including the famous one from Star Wars, which he uses in context, ie after he has done something naughty. But he will never be the talker that Parker is, nor some of the ekkies we have seen on Youtube. As well as Salty learns new tricks, we have been unable to teach him to talk on command. I am going to try your tips.

Right you are sir! Maybe extinction is a harsh term, we’re not talking about bad behavior here. I certainly wouldn’t want to get rid of Parkerdoodles :) it’s more about rewarding the appropriate use.

To talk on command, get him worked up to where he wants to talk. For Parker its being around running water that guarantees he’ll talk. And if he’s like Parker he goes though phases of favorite words or phrases. Get him speaking somehow, some way!

Once he’s speaking, start repeating the command. When he ultimately says the correct word, he instantly gets favorite treat of all time :)

Running water! Duh I should have put 2 and 2 together,Salty is always babbling while Geri is cooking, which usually involves running the sink fawcett. Thanks Chris.
