Lots of parrots, most of them rescues
As some of you know, I take in rescue birds, try to socialize them and find them loving forever homes.

I was called up the other day with a pair splitting up- they had an ekkie and a rosella (a bit larger than a cockatiel). They had found a place for them to stay, but as the ekkie was screaming day and night  the family could not cope and was already worn quite thin as they had been woken 1-2 times every night (which I totally get) and could find no rest during the day either.

The owners were contemplating getting them put down. Luckily they called me.

Both of them arrived yesterday, both in parakeet cages  I was told they had been out of their cages for an hour last Wednesday:smile040:

Theas cage was so small, she could not even stretch her wings half way. There were one perch and a rope, nothing else. She basically could sit in one spot and not move.

Yesterday when she came, I took her right out of the cage. I did not have the heart to leave her in there for even a minute. I had no clue if she would bite or attack. I was told she bit her owners and had bitten 2 family members of the family, who looked after them.

She stepped right up and hasn't left my side since. She did scream 5 times yesterday. Today she hasn't said a peep (she has however been ON me the entire time).

She is the gentlest soul ever. She just wants love and attention. I don't think I will ever have the heart to rehome her. I think I have already found her forever home :smile015::smile015::smile015:

Aaaaaaahhhhhh what a sweetie! Eckie beak snuggles are so cute.

My eckie just thrives with attention (and it doesn't even have to be snuggles) - they just love being part of your life.
I guess it's no wonder she was upset - with the split up and being left in their cage she probably felt quite isolated.

Thanks for adopting both of them!

Um I would have been screaming at the top of my lungs too if I were in that situation! I’m so so glad you rescued them, they needed you desperately! And what a lovely bird ❤️

I can confirm you are right . . . I now have a trio

I'm not sure how Anansi has resisted for so long :-D

Well I have Sofus already, so I guess that it's basically Sofus, who has multiplied ;)

Here's Sofus (from when I got him and he still plucked his down)

And Sofus today (no more plucking- maybe a little fat though :31: )

I just measured the cage Thea came in. It's 60x60x40cm/23x23x15inches (HxWxD)

I haven't been here for a few weeks, but hope to get some help with Thea.

As you know I received Thea from less than optimal living conditions.

She has been a sweetheart and she has been improving her flight skills. She has however had a problem with her feet from day one. She seemed to be having difficulties in perching on anything larger than her rope.

Yesterday I moved her (and Sofus) to another cage. The cage has a lot of small perches (formerly inhabited by Illigers macaws) so I didn't think to move her rope to the other cage. This morning she was fine, but this evening I found her at the bottom of the cage (the cages are open during the day, so she never left the cage). She is unable to walk on her right leg. She was sitting very still and didn't make a sound.

I have given her some apple and some handrearing formula and she ate both. I will be taking her to the vet in the morning (it's past midnight here). I am worried that there is more wrong with her, than just "bad feet".

I have heard from friends of her former family, that she was very aggressive and they had great problems with her (things I have only learned after I got her). Here she's a complete sweetheart, but I don't really ask anything of her. She really just wants to sit on me all day.

My mind is racing right now. Is there any known parrot/ekkie illness, that would give them bad coordination, poor sight (just a hunch, she seems to not see well) and difficulty in closing/locking her feet?

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Thanks for rescuing beautiful Thea from a living hell. Such a tiny cage, wonder if her muscles have atrophied from minimal use? Hopefully the vet can identify the cause. I cannot think of a typical ekkie problem matching this description.
